Has anyone been down to visit the Kangaroo Mine lately? It's on private property with a current lease held by the Ballarat Mine. I'm told it has now been backfilled.

We recently visited two mines close to Ballarat. The first adit has two long hand dug parallel drives with a shaft and short lower drive. If you don't like crawling then avoid this mine. The second mine retains many original features. In some of the photos the lads have removed their hard hats because it was hard to move around. There is a shaft below a false floor in the upper drive near the portal that leads to a lower passage. We used a snatch strap to climb down with and there was no danger in falling as the shaft was not very deep. The lower drive is in a bad state with a large rock ready to fall at the brow. There is a second portal leading to the lower drive, but this has become very silted up over time.

We wore hard hats most of the time but in the cramped conditions around the shaft they were becoming more of a hindrance than a help and were removed for a brief period.

You guys can come and grab me for an adventure ANYTIME I would say there the best pics I have seen in ages or at all of the gold mines in Victoria even looking back in books you don't see the quality like these photos, Greencheeks :lol: their green with envy ... just tell me when you find some good rock to crush guys ... awesome contribution to the forum keep them coming ...

On Saturday we did a trip up through Heathcote and Graytown. We had mixed results and only found a small number of accessible underground workings. Simon took most of the photos and the others by myself using auto-timer.

Absolutely awesome photos again guys. They are stunning captures! The photos certainly help put yhe video into perspective as it seemed a lot tighter in film. Can clearly see the size now though, absolutely awesome. The large stope is a scarey one..how many metres did the false bottom ladder go across it for?

It goes across between 3-5 metres. This mine has two levels below ground. The last shaft goes down about 40 metres below the level Simeon photographed. We did not have enough rope to access the lower drive.

The following photos are from Belltopper Tunnel near Malmsbury. Earlier photos on this site that claim to be Belltopper are from another mine in Drummond. The mistake was due to poor research on my behalf. Belltopper consists of a large long drive. About 600 metres along the drive there is a collapsed section below a shaft. You can crawl over this and then you find another drive that is full of clear water. The drive appears to turn a corner at this stage. We were not able to enter the water filled drive.
