I hate to put a dampner on Dunollys Vanilla slices, but the Bridgewater Bakery won Australia's Vanilla Slice Triumph in August this year, and can claim the best Vanilla slice in Australia.
I happened to be passing through Bridgewater about a month ago and saw signs all over the bakery windows. The shop was near full of Vanilla slices, with very little else to choose from. Of course I had to have one with a Cappuccino. Very very good, but I believe I've had better at a bakery in Monbulk Vic.
Now this should start a real debate. :p

The great Vanilla slice debate could go on for weeks. Having tried a slice from both places I believe they are equally great also the bakery Bourkes shop at Woodend.
But it is also the service that sweetens the taste for me. Having waited sometimes for 20 minutes to be served at Bridgewater and just as long at Woodend. Dunolly with it's great warm service and excellent coffee wins hands down. Yes I have been to the one at Monbulk also the Bakery at Yarra Glen.
A big plus is that being in the west means that the prices are much more reasonable and you don't have to drive for 2 hours to ride on a steam train Maldon runs a steam train as does Queensclif. :p :p :p :p
Cheers db
