First time putting up a photo, hope this works.
I guess it just goes to show you never know what you are going to stumble on, this was 15cm down on an old deserted property in Moss vale NSW. Crazy when you research this badge that they are actually bought and sold by collectors. I don't think this one is rare, but will find out hopefully in a few days. :D

nice find mate we call Moss vale. Moss vegas because it is crazy town what happens in moss vale will be in the news :)

Hi Pete 1969. Just abit of friendly advice, it is an offence to possess or offer for sale any item of NSW Police Property without authorisation. A number of people have been charged for offering for sale items of Police Property on line and there is ongoing online monitoring for such property. My advice to you is to attend your nearest Police Station and hand it in. After all blind freddy can see who the owner is!

Lol Wally.
As far as digging deeper the ground where it was is about the only soft patch out there, found a few 2c coins and some other junk. There is over 15 acres of land and buildings there and no one has been around the place for over 40 years. The grass is out of control in most places making it difficult to get into most areas and swing the stick. There were a lot of workers there a long time ago and I am sure there is plenty in the ground, just not sure how to tackle it. Tried to visualise where they would have gone to sit down and have lunch, stuff like that, but who knows what has been removed in the time it has been there. Possibly trees and some small buildings gone and even some buildings there now should be condemned. Would be interesting to see what else is out there.

All good scoopa,
called Bowral station after I found it and just waiting on info from Picaa: (Police Insignia Collectors Association of Australia, Inc) and ozbadge to see what I need to do. I know things like this could be needed to complete a case or close a file possibly and I will just find out the process here.
pete

Seems like you have matters in hand but Picaa and Ozbadge can't help you. All you do is go to Bowral Police Station hand it in and the Constable will give you a copy of Miscellanous Propety Receipt and Event number and you're done. You might even find out from the Constable the circumstances of how the Sergeants ID came to be there. Good Luck

Had a quick look, and it looks like that style of badge (with NSW Police instead of NSW Police Force) was in use between 1990 and 2007. Those manufactured after 2002 had serial numbers on the back.

Yes it does have the serial number. Thing I do not understand is there are some selling on Ebay.

personally I would not sell this in the unlikely event that they let me keep it.
I am sure they want to see it either way so will take it in tomorrow.

Hope I get a nice cop who at least knows if it is something that can be kept or not and can explain the rules to me :)

Looks like there is an interesting story unfolding here, it is not often you can dig up something in the ground and chase down the story of how it got there.

I will definitely be following this post to see where it goes.

Sounds like you are onto some interesting ground, enjoy !!

I can't believe people are allowed to sell police ID on eBay ?

Especially one so relatively modern

Yeah mate just flash that in macdonalds for a free feed of Big Macs and down the road at dunkin donuts ;)

I would be so **** scared of being pulled over with that in my possession I would have taken it straight to the first cop station I could find on the way home.

They are open 24 hours , 7 days you know :D

It is very much against the law to have that... I would hand it in... When a copper looses things like that they are in very big do do..

handed it in earlt this afternoon at Bowral police. let them know there are some on ebay for sale and that I want it back if allowed. Will see what happens.

I'm an Ex N.S.W. Cop. Technically, yes it's an offence to have this in your possession. You if were found with this whilst being searched, or in your car, you would be charged with Goods in Custody. If you produced it, you could get charged with 'Assume Designation' (Impersonating a Police Officer). If the Cops did a search on your house, and found it, Goods in Custody. But on the other hand, if you were not a drug dealer, or Criminal, and you had it for example on a 'Plaque' in your Bar at home, or on the wall. Yes, you still could get charged, but very unlikely, you had no bad intentions, just for decoration.

AND YOU don't get Free Macca's from producing your I.D. Police only in uniform get half price. No half price for Detectives, or anyone in plain clothes.
McDonald's what 'Uniforms' coming in and out of their establishments.
