Hi Guys
My wife and I have only been involved with metal detecting for a few months now. Something I have always wanted to do. I am a keen fisherman, and maybe it's a bit like that, as you never know what your going to catch. I bit the bullet three months ago and bought a GPX 4500 and I was away. After reading lots of posts and other information on gold detecting, finding out about the best settings for the GPX and doing some practise in the park with my wedding ring, I thought, well this can't be hard! My nearest areas to try are places located west of Warwick, QLD. The first spot we tried was Talgai GPA. My wife came along and was curious about this metal detecting business. I tried to operate the machine in the way I had been guided from all the reading I had done. Low and slow, tried around old workings, gullies, slopes and around the tree bases, etc,. No gold. Plenty of targets though! Not all bad though. The machine worked well and seemed to be finding targets well. I figured if I am digging these targets, they could have been gold!

Thanks Limpalot,

We went out again the week after to Durikai which is not far from the Talgai GPA. We ventured from Karara down Carbean Road and turned off at Burrabaranga Road and found ourselves wandering up a dry gully which had signs of old workings and more recent diggings. We found many targets, just not the right colour. See pics.

One interesting piece looked like an old Musket ball. It was a difficult dig, about 40cm down among large rocks and was lodged in a crevice at the bottom. I had myself convinced it was the right stuff. Still no gold!
My wife said she wouldn't mind trying the detecting herself, so, undaunted I searched for a suitable machine. After a couple of weeks we settled on an sdc 2300. Again, a bit of practise in the park :Y: All good, it seemed to work well.
