New to Cairns and keen to go panning close by if anyone has some info to share.

Been panning and detecting in Victoria a bit earlier in the year so have some experience but none around here.

Welcome to PA Pig55.
Sorry can't help you but there is a few PA members that live in Cairns maybe one of them can send you in the right direction.

Went to the local mining shop just down the road today in Cairns to buy local maps and the shop has closed!

G'day Pig 55
Welcome to the forum
There is a group of us from the Cairns area that often meet up and I will let you know of the next one when we have a date.
No real detecting areas close to Cairns but a few creeks have a bit of colour.

Cheers Greg

Welcome Pig55,
Yep it has closed, as Greg mentioned we normally have a meeting every so often. Unfortunately our meeting place Nq Miners den has closed and so we are trying to sort out an alternative so that these things can still happen.

There is a map shop at the marina, Cairns Charts. Great blokes and good maps but not much help if your looking for prospecting tips.

Plenty on the web about the mining history of cairns and surrounding areas.
Plenty of creeks and rivers out there worth investigating, have a bit of a research and let us know if youve got any specific questions.

Cheers,
TGW.

Thanks for the info everyone on map shop, found it and got what I need to have look and some panning tomorrow in some of the areas mentioned on other posts.

Welcome to PA Pig55

Simmo I'd be interested in looking over some maps.

Pig55 don't hesitate in getting in contact I'm always keen to get out beit panning or wanding I'm currently looking at relics in the local area and panning the local area.

Went out yesterday to check out a few places, panned some material from a bedrock crevis and found a very smooth 1966 1 cent coin and a spec of gold on my second pan, always good to see something in the pan to know I'm not wasting my time, have attached picture below.

Still can't find some of the places listed on other parts of this site like the north johnson river and little mulgrave river.

I ran into a local at Koah and he said he had a dry creek on his property that I could pan when it's running, great news... it's raining today so I may go and have a crack at that tomorrow.

Would be keen to catch up Spyhunter and go out in the coming weeks if your available. I dont have a detector so I'm only panning for a bit of fun. Im going to attempt to knock up a little sluice this arvo so I can use the river flow and save the arms from panning.

Picture of my 1966 1 cent coin and my first piece of Queensland gold, not sure which is worth more...

I was expecting this question Mr. Moderator, it's a very long story in full but can be told in short without detail.... my nickname has followed me since primary school and the avatar is the Chinese symbol my nickname
