An MRI scanner shrunk down to something you can fit into a pair of goggles that has a range of two or three meters which has a setting to only visualize or highlight anything over the predetermined specific gravity such as gold. Off course strapping an existing MRI machine to your face has it's difficulties and then there is that minor issue of large metal objects such as spanners being sucked out of the ground at high velocity and hitting you in the forehead ;)

Has to be self propelled , built in esky bbq etc and weigh no more than 1 kilo . And will definately have to dig its own tarkets and refill them

The sort that is autonomous, powered by co2 from the air, can pinpoint gold to 1mm accuracy, has an electromagnet tuned to only gold, inbuilt shovel to backfill, gps guided to run a search grid then return and deposit all finds.
Also doubles as a foot and back massager in the evenings :p

I'll be a bit more realistic and hope the detector manufacturers get the hint. I would love a detector that is waterproof, drop proof, has a motorised swinging arm so all you need to do is maintain the correct distance from the surface. I would also love it to be multi use, and have voice notification of TIDs, like, gold, Old copper coin, silver coin, ring, junk etc. add to this having a solar power option would be great. :p

With what exists now or could, I would say an sdc, with a speaker on the correct side. Two coil sizes. A little bit more ground penetration. And does not fall over when you put it down for $ 2000 By the way I don't own an sdc and have not spent long using one.

Back to fantasy, what about one of these with a coil on the bottom. Flies out and brings the gold back to you while you crack Anouther cold beer.

Why just one? What about a fleet of them. Send out a swarm of them to go search a 1 km square area and mark all the locations of targets via GPS, then you just go dig them out.

I dream of a device that will make all the metal objects in a site levitate about 4 1/2 feet off the ground, then I can go around cherry picking through the canslaw, ringpulls and bottletops for all the gold, silver and goldies.

GPS location could make it slightly more achievable :Y:
