Well done to Minelab for thinking outside the box I think.

they might be thinking outside of a box as you say ......

but the box has no label to identify its contents and most people wont have any idea wtf is supposed to be in that box

rule number one in marketing and advertising.

make sure people know very clearly just exactly what it is youre selling ?

are they selling **** , sunblock , raincoats for old men , bikinis , drum sets ?

Haha I'm having a great chuckle at these well thought through comments :)

It's pretty obvious they're selling metal detectors... Isn't it?

I didn't even bother with watching the ad, I have heard enough here,

Well, $6000 for a GPX 5000 or a fishing dingy, at least with a dingy I am more likely to catch something I will value.

If I had a spare $6000 I would be leaning towards fishing, if you have the money and your just doing it for fun good on you enjoy it and have fun, hope you find heaps.

I have found one 0.48 gram nugget with a $1200 detector in 25 years, yes it was a great adventure and I had plenty of fun on the beaches but I would never expect to recover my costs.

If minelab can hardly keep up with demand on there GPX 5000 now why are the wasting money on ads? :/

This ad is weird,

Now I can appreciate scantily clad beauties as much as the next bloke but anyone could be forgiven for thinking it was an ad for a DJ or So you think you can dance. Maybe they should have focused more on a young bloke in the bush, finding a whopping nugget and the next thing you see him driving a new car with one of the above mentioned beauties sitting next to him. There they can see a direct result that could happen if they bought a minelab.

Funky beat though, might make it the ring tone on my phone

Cheers,
Matt

please dont think i am having a go at you , i am just a bit offended at some of the conduct of Minelab and to me , the ad does nothing to improve their image.

i guess its like music or food . subjective . everyone likes different things

have a good day EC

Most here has missed the point of this commercial.

Do you guys need a Minelab commercial to buy a
Product? I am guessing no.

The target audience is not and its obvious geared towards

Many that have replied or the 35's plus market.

The target audience in selling detectors to are the young

People which makes sense which is a new market Minelab

Are obviously targeting.

Just my 2c.

Like your work wolf.

What's your prospecting game and where you do play?

Cheers.

I do a bit of beach detecting & Coin Shooting.

Getting back into prospecting though. Gave it away a few years ago after purchasing the SD 2200 and realising it was

not so sensitive to the small stuff then add what the price per ounce was back then which was like $200 or so an ounce

plus the travelling so decided to focus more on school and other stuff. Being self employed I have more time now.

I have plenty of time for Maryborough and surroundings areas. Its a good area. You need to know where to go though.

Fortunately I know a few areas where we found Gold with VLF's back in the old days..

Some areas have been hammered and you need to think outside the square.

Having a detector hire shop in the middle of the triangle does not help either.

Why is it odd? I did not state what coil I was using so a comparison can not be made with the other 2 guys

you mentioned. There were also good and not so good 2200's ;)

you just said you purchased an sd2200 and realised it was not sensative to small stuff. I find that odd.

Back in the 90's we were using vlf's. These machines especially my Tesoro zap zapped on .15 gram nuggets buried an inch in the

ground not a mellow tone change. The Sd2200 was purchased and used in the late 90's not today with a 14" DD. Looking for those small

nuggets you needed to listen to the faint/low threshold change targets unlike a GPX with a small coil today where the signal would be very

clear. I made a comparison between my vlf and the PI. "I like what the PI offered (depth and stability wise)" but "liked the way my

VLF "responded" on the small nuggets".

When I purchased the SD it cost about $2500 and to recoup your money you needed to find about 9 ounces at

$280 an ounce plus I was concerned about new machines being introduced where your machine value would drop in price.

So I made the decision to focus on something else.

Its a different ball game today. A 1 gram nugget on gold price alone is worth about $50 compared to about $10 in the late 90's with the
value of a .1 grammer being a $1 or so.

I'm a marketing guy and I also understand MineLabs desire to sell product as I'll be a customer someday. I could think of 100 different ways to brand and sell a detector. That was just silly.

Also, you do need to sell to your market...and without any stats to look at. I'd say that's the 35+ male. It's the first rule of marketing. Find out who your customer is...then tell them about your products (new/current) in a funny or informative way.

I'll give their marketing manager some credit...it was ballsy. Sometimes those agency guys just make it sound all warm and fuzzy in the pitch.

BTW...if the marketing manager was fired and the CEO is reading this post...I'm currently looking for a position. ;)

Doesn't do alot for me, as an advertisement. The tones to make a symphony was clever but that's about where clever ended. I think targeting a wider younger audience is probably a good idea, but this comes of a cheesy for the sub 35 group. Better to have gone with nugget envy or top of the line, or the dusty prospector heading off in the nice sports car with the girl as suggested above. I've watched it and learnt nothing. Definite facepalm moment.

I watched it and the single overwhelming thought was simply that the "creative genius" has gone about 2 kilos of cocaine past the point where his brain went out his arse.

and who was retarded enough to approve it ?

maybe he got offered some coke at the pitch party too

Tough crowd... I will leave it there fellas :)

On a more positive note, I just purchased my first Metal Detector!!!! (and yes it is a MineLab)

X-Terra 705 as a starting point, to try and get some miles under the belt and learn what I can. I will post my first gold find, which is inevitable (in my mind).

Come on you guys, it wasn't that bad. It was targeted at the younger generation. It was saying you don't have to be some old guy to like metal detecting and when your out metal detecting you are in your own little world and its cool. Why not buy a ctx3030 go down the beach, have a look at all the nice girls sun baking in their bikinis etc. and find a big fat gold ring at the same time. I don't know about you fellas that sounds good to me. :)

I think a lot of people also don't like it because of the fact he was detecting around people whilst at the beach, I make it a point not to detect directly around people, as not everyone has the same view on detectorists as portrayed on the clip unfortunately. It's a bit like you are just hanging around waiting for them to drop a piece of jewellery or something, and with the current laws on theft by finding in Oz, that may not be a good thing. Yes, I am probably looking into it too much, but it's really directed at the more lucrative US market than here. :)

nah it was funny and I'm still laughing. Remember that cheesy minelab commercial? Yeah that got people talking
