Here are examples of using on-line and purchased maps for use in mapping gold locations. This example is Moliagul Victoria - home of the 'Welcome Stranger' nugget. What I do is collate all this data, do conversions, usually from chains and/or miles to metres and create a series of re-aligned overlays and create a new map. To get best resolutions, i usually go for tifs and use the snipping tool to cut and paste my maps. Hope this is of interest. (Hope its not too big memory wise Nugget)

I really don't know where you can get the 1 25:000 Vic maps for free on-line - be interested to see as the I paid a lot of money for the whole state.

The new 25:000 are being printed but they don't show the digging on them anymore.

That's a pity - I have found some beaut new ground on 'forgotten' gold diggings markings.

Cheers Hunting. I have the 1 :25 000 Memory Maps series (Victoria) - its the one that also has the 3D modelling and lots of other stuff. 1:25 000 are the way to go. I noticed on some old Talbot/Amherst maps that they were created upside down!! Didn't that cause me to do some thinking. They were the original maps drawn up by possibly the first gold commissioner on site. On the bigger version of the old Moliagul map in my first post - Oate's claim is actually marked. I have stood on that spot many times - great historic site Moligaul and still some nice bits and pieces to be found around the surfacing.

I've seen VICMAP 1:25,000 using Oziexplorer and Ozi3D, it is the best detailed Topo out there.
Oziexplorer is also available as an Android App. So on a small tablet or something like a GalaxyS3 phone with an inbuilt GPS antenna, can be used in the field.

The Pc version of Ozi is $130 or $150 bundled with Ozi3D, larger scale maps Auslig 250k and Statewide 100k are $29 to $54. But for detail 25k are the best detail.
check out their web page for Australian pricing. The Android App is only $25, but does not have the same functionality as the PC version.

Comparatively Vicmap, is, I think a $200 hit, so more than the software.

I have no affiliation with any of the above products, but I am experienced in their use.
