Is this gold? My son found it smashing rocks at Kenilworth.

I don't know the area but looking at it without any local knowledge, it seems to look more like how pyrite would form? Hope I am wrong actually!

It looks like a rather wonderful little pyrite specimen. I say that because there's a little chunk at the top that looks rather cuboid.
Its a nice find. I wonder, how many of those ugly brown rocks have a shiny filling?

Hard to say from a photograph, but when I zoom in, the yellow bit appears to resolve itself more like a mineral crystal that glistens. Gold will have an even yellow colour that doesn’t glisten.
If you know someone with a metal detector, if it were gold it should give off a decent metallic signal. You can also try a multimeter to test the conductivity of the yellow bit. Metals are highly conductive whereas minerals are generally not.

Scratch....
Smash....
Passs....
Jokes aside..smash it out then try to flatten it with a hammer.
Flattens....stays same colour...gold.
All else, shattered, changes its false.
Done it for years but hey, some still trick me till I try those things.
Good luck.

I'd be feeling pretty confident with that but my metal detector would make the decision.
