How to clean Silver Coins

Hi Lord,
Try soaking it in a fairly stiff solution of citric acid and water for five or ten seconds and then wrap it tightly in aluminum foil as per Heatho's directions, after that, a rub down with bi-carb; worked quit well for me on silvers.

If soaking inlemon juice for a week or what Heatho said dosnt work try boiling the coin in water let cool so you can touch it then rub with bicarb paste between fingers..If that dont work a low voltage electrolysis will for sure :Y:

The thrips has been spending most of the day in strong bi carb soda mix occasionally taking it out to wrap in alfoil as suggested.
I have done this 4 more times, so 6 in total. Leaving I the bi carb mix for up to hours at a time.
I must admit I never felt the alfoil get hit or smell the rotten egg gas so hopefully I done it correct.
It has definatly improved a lot, the key is patience and repetitive.
I am going to try the strong CAB and alfoil method now and see if it improves

The silver is now fully cleaned.
SinHof, your suggestion seemed to work really well.
Soak in a strong CAB solution, then wrap tightly in alfoil and finish with a bi carb rub.
I done this 2 times to get the final result.
Could smell the rotten eggs this time so I know it was working, I could also see an imprint off the black stain on the alfoil once removed

Didn't seem to affect the obverse at all so guessing the reverse was always going to turn out like this.
Happy with the results.

After the success off the three pence I got out a stubborn florin that I have tried cleaning without success.
The strong CAB soak followed by aluminum foil wrap and bi carb rub worked a treat again. I did this 4 times and found longer in the CAB, less in the foil worked well.
It now looks much better for displaying in my opinion.

See what I mean about the rough surface that the foil method sometimes results in. It did get rid of the oxidation, though there's something going on with the reaction between the aluminium and silver that coats what would have been quite a smooth surface. Anyway, if you are happy with the results, then that is all that matters.

This Topic has a lot of info in it for you, but check the year and see if it is a rare coin, you dont want to damage its value by cleaning it if it is rare

Last week I got a 1834 sixpence in good nick , and today a 1854 penny not in to bada condission in a different location, my old mate also got a penny 1917.

The trouble is we are looking for gold lol.
