According to my source it is ambiguous

says it was the way the glass was blown.(round bottom)
Another was that it made you drink more ,because if you put it down it would TUMLBLE over which made the drinker buy another one.
The third was because the Glass blowers in Venice where there was a thriving glass industry were called Tumblers

My info is... Not glass. Late 16th to 17th century. I have pics

Further research shows tumblers were beaten silver where the bottom of the vessel was much heavier, where if it was tilted it would return to the upright position

Nailed it Pete. Round bottom and weighted to sit upright if the inebriated owner put it down roughly.
Worth a ton of $ if ya find an early example.
