Thanks Richo.

Once upon a time there was a wealthy and brilliant scientist.
His last great experiment involved a mass of equipment left to him by a fellow scientist.
It involved heavy lead balls and looked something like a modern home gym.
It involved a year of work and the results have hardly been improved upon even with all our modern technology.
Wew are talking late 18th century.
Who was he and what did he determine with these experiments?

Good luck :D

Henry Cavendish

He used an apparatus left to him by John Michel ,geologist to establish the weight of the Earth.
This apparatus was a modification of the torsional balance built by Michell.

Nice one Pete. Nailed it.
When at last he had finished his calculations, Cavendish announced that the Earth weighed a little over 13,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 pounds, or six billion trillion metric tons, to use the modern measure.

Today, scientists have at their disposal machines so precise they can detect the weight of a single bacterium and so sensitive that readings can be disturbed by someone yawning seventy-five feet away, but they have not significantly improved on Cavendish's measurements of 1797. The current best estimate for Earth's weight is 5.9725 billion trillion metric tons, a difference of only about 1 percent from Cavendish's finding. Interestingly, all of this merely confirmed estimates made by Newton 110 years before Cavendish without any experimental evidence at all.

Your question sir.

Your question sir.
It took some reading.
I often wonder if all these genius have been touched by the hand of god or someone as their calculations etc are unbelievable, considering how far back through history you wish to go they are there.

Who was the American who's father financed U.S.soap makers Procter & Gamble when that company first started.
Defended the Americas cup.built his own Sports Cars.
Finished 4th in the 24 heurs du Mans in his own car.
Had his own auto museum & died at 96.
And a humble man he was !

That's the chap.

I met him in L.A.years ago At his museum which on the day I went to see it it was closed.

However there was this old guy driving a Very old Ferrari around the car park.when he stopped I started to talk to him.

Hearing my accent & me giving him a bullshit story about coming all the way to see the museum.
He gave me a guided tour & even let me sit in the Bugatti Royal that was on display. In those days it was valued at around 8 million.
All his Le Mans cars were there including a birdcage Maserati.
A fantastic museum which since his death has been closed & the collection sold off
As I said ,a multi millionaire but a humble and likeable man.

Your turn Rod

Thanks,
Which 15th century prince had a book written about him, that is still fascinates people till this day?
