Hi we are from the Hunter Valley and are brand new to this hobby. With the kids grown up we are traveling more and enjoy having a "fossick" around. We do not have a detector yet but are planning a trip out to Hill End after Easter and would like to get one for the trip. Looking forward to reading through the forums and learning what we can.

Welcome aboard MelBen, hope you'se do well on the hunting. :)

Hi Melben.

I saw your post in another thread about the member meet up section.
As long as you are logged in if you look under the first heading at the top of the threads it says member only - first heading under that is member meetups.

Good luck with the detecting :Y:

Northeast.

Welcome to the forum MelBen there a few of us in the Huntet Valley area and Hill End is a great place with lots to see and do so enjoy your time there but rug up that time off the year looking foward to your updates

And Melben, as per HH's post in the other thread you need 10 posts up to be able access the members only stuff - I forgot about that :Y:

Yep have our winter woolies and beanies within easy reach :) Besides from the detecctor (Which im thinking we will end up with the SDC 2300) What other gear should we get before heading out to HE ?

Hi MelBen something to dig with a pin pointer can be good as well gloves and a bag / back pack off some kind
What part of the Hunter ae you from :)

Gday MelBen,
A map of the area is essential . Doug Stones map is a place to start. It shows the Common, where you can prospect and the areas that you cant. It dosent show all the gold bearing gulleys or surfaced area and the tracks on the Common are not accurate either. Im just back from a few weeks up there and I found that the Hema app on my tablet showed just about all the tracks on the Common.
If it has been raining beware of the bog hole that is about 300m south of the Catholic Cemetary . It can be a bit of fun to cross. It is just as you leave the Flat at Tamboroora before you start to climb up the first rise. There is a house on the left as you approach it.

Good luck, i had success finding gold with my SDC,

Cheers

Bob

Thanks Bob. We have a Hema HN7 so will utilize the maps on that. I also just down loaded memory maps on my tablet but will get the Doug Stone map also.

The Doug Stone maps are great I have a set of them plus l love maps

This is a great read as well

Some sort of tool belt. In mine I carry my pick in a holder off my left side, plastic scoop (essential), a plastic jar for small pieces and a large pouch to put the junk in - please pick up and dispose of all metal you detect.

Then a small back pack with drinks, phone, etc.

One tip for you - don't have your phone in your hip pocket on the side that you have the detector. It makes the SDC intermittently squark for what seems like no reason. I'm a bit slow so it took me 3 sessions to work out what it was
