Hi Matt. No doubt your mates have told you about some of the things they have been doing. Of course unsure where your specific interests may lie or develop at this stage so hard to be specific about advice.
There are plenty of books, publications and you tube videos on gold/gem prospecting, panning, sluicing, metal detecting etc that can also give you a sample of what to expect and places to go and how to begin.
Outside of this forum there are also clubs and organizations which can help and even a visit to your local prospecting shop can give you an idea of the sorts of equipment used and costs.
Good luck and feel free to ask questions however simple (we’ve all been beginners at some time) about any specific issues as they arise.
