Appreciate some advice of what would be the best between these two offroad/onroad 2 stroke bikes ?

Yamaha DT 175
Suzuki TS 185

Both are early 90s & in good working order with rego , would be doing prospecting & some road use .
Also any idea of what they are worth please :)

Hay OB,
I had a TS185 in the late 70's and it was a great bike.
A lot of my mates have had DT175's over the years and they are a good thing.
What's the asking price?

Hands down the dt. Hoping though you don't plan on going on massive trips, pretty easy to ring the neck on these. Had the dt as my first bike, still got it. Good for parts (there's a million of them out there blue & yellow or the black and red). As with every purchase of a vehicle you might get a lemon but they made these damn near bullet proof reliable. I would think most guys that have owned one would have a soft spot for them.

Are you wanting to buy one of these bikes because you want transport of because your into stuff from that time period?

I'm only asking because for $1000 there are a crap load better options around if it's transport your after. Almost all of them will give better performance and reliability and be much kinder on your wallet in the long term as far as parts availability is concerned.

hands down on the dt mate, i was one up on my first bike dt 250, my older brother had a ts250x major piston grabbing issues.
We found the dt to be as tough as nails, as with any two banger just watch "oiling up" (constant low rev riding) dosnt hurt to wring their necks every now and then....also adds a bitta fun as well.. ;)

Ps...personally for cruising around for prospecting purposes i'd be looking for a four banger, idle all day with no oiling issues, im trying to convince the mrs to buy me a camel.....i reckon one of these things would be spot on for covering ground looking for some good prospecting spots..... :D

Thats how my TS died.... both times.

I'll back this statement, with a caveat. That being that if you are even halfway mechanically minded you can pick up these old troupers for next to nicks. I'm leaning to the side of it being ok value for money on the basis that these are the two to choose from, and after rego and rwc costs for a bike in good nick it's not a bad price, not outrageous anyhow. My mind goes to the ktm i had for a while. Some bikes just give you trouble and are very hard long and expensive fixes. The old dt is like an old victa, built simple solid and reliable. But alot of time has passed since they were a go to option. Put my crf here and we are talking light years of difference. I'm can only speak from my personal experience and from the info presented.

As dwt has eroded to a 4 stroke is an excellent option and would be where i would start. The older xr models had good grunt for road use and reliability in spades. I had a 600 that i used for hill climbing and cruising in the bush, heavy type beast but prob my fav out of all my off road/road combos that i had. Bloody tyres weren't cheap then and still aren't now. Could carry a payload too for days out in the wilderness. The only issue i had was weight, but I'm a light build anyone over 90 kg wouldn't notice. I wish i never sold it.

Thanks guys for all your input , I like 2 strokes because I understand them & there easy for me to work on .
Looks like the Yamaha DT 175 has the votes then :D

Sorry I didn't address your post , I want an off road bike more then a transport bike , but like it to be able to do both & do love 2 strokes .

A 98-99 CRM250 could be worth a look if it's a 2 banger your after.
Road registrable with smooth power delivery and with the 6 speed box they will hoot on the roads but have the lower gearing 1st-4th that's awesome in the tight and hilly stuff.
I'm pissed I sold mine.

Whatever you choose, have fun and keep the shiny side up. ;)

2 strokes are great.I got a ktm 300 a few years ago and it is sweeeeet.
I love the sound, the smell, the kick when you hit the throttle
2 bangers all the way

I believe dts are still in production in south america so parts should be easier to get if needed?
