Help identifying some objects

Hi all,

Hope you can help, I have quite a few objects I need to help identify, any help is appreciated. There are a few.

Also, if you know what I could do with them. They are from an old house site believed to be burnt down in 1939.

No 4 is the oven door section off an old stove as well as no 20, 23 and 24 all parts as well. some of the steel items appear to be off an old farm implement used for cutting lucern??? They look like parts off some of the things we used to have on the farm when I was a kid. The box is an ammunition box for a 7.62 Mauser [possibly] rifle. The lock is a beauty. 10, 9, 8, 7 +22 look to be parts of a vehicle, possible an old buggy or cart. 22 is spring steel, most likely part of the leaf suspension. Given that you believe the house burnt down in 1939 it was probably disused or broken down. The items youve found look more like things youd find in a shed which also explains the padlock.

25 and 26 - The L2A2 is the ammo designation and this is probably British or under licence from the poms. 7.62MM was the standard NATO round adopted across the western world, replaced later by the 5.56 mm. 7.62MM linked is the key bit of info. Given the ammo was manufactured in 1963, its most likely for a Belgian FN MAG (belt fed machine gun), which uses 7.62MM linked. (introduced in 1958 and still used today across many Armies, including the poms) Other uses for linked 7.62MM linked was to sit down and pull the bloody things apart by hand for use in SLRs (7.62mm) and manually load magazines. It is also possible that the ammo was used by the Australian Army GPMG M60 - just a possibility, but 1963 may be a tad early. Either way it is a military specific ammo box.

HI,
Photo 1&2 Victorian Railways padlock pre about 1935. Photo 27 birthday badge from Murdock's birthday/baby club unsure of the vintage but before 1940.

The ammo box is British the two clues I picked up are the box construction, Australian made boxes did not at the age of this box have the recess for pack mule straps and SV130 on the latch is Victualing Store 130,you could maybe get $10 for it but makes a good "man cave" item, unable to find it's location just yet, hope that helps.

The ammo box is Vietnam era ammo box for the American M60 machine gun. Each box for an m60 always had 500 rounds and its calibre is 7.62. Great finds

Hi,
Just got some information about the ammo box, it comes originally from Portsmouth England and was supplied for use with the M60 for RAN(Royal Australian Navy) from 1959 to 1967 after that time this ammunition was made in Australia either in South Australia or in the Sydney area and was then supplied in metal boxes with a modified lip for the later modified link clips, 4 ball rounds to one tracer and much later 4 ball, one tracer and one armoured piecing(tungsten tip). This information was supplied by forum members of a web site called "gun plot" ex RAN members(armourers).

12. Appears to be an old harvester stripping blade minus the teeth (where the holes appear) from the early models horse drawn where the blade sat protruding from the machine, although i must say its not like any type I've seen before so quite possibly it could be something else entirely. Old machinery can command a good price on an online auction but most of the stuff above although nice to look (drive wheels cogs etc) is of little real value, i couldn't count how many tonnes of this stuff i saw and processed working in the scrap metal industry.

Don't think #10 is a spanner, looks more like a conrod, can see the white metal in the small end. Maybe a part of #18, #19?

yeah its a con rod probably matching that crankshaft

not sure if the crankshaft is off an engine though as they usually have more mass in the flywheel end

i would guess at either a pump or a shaft off a thresher that would have probably been driven by a cart wheel and the cart would have been pulled by 6 or 8 draught horses

Ah, the ammo box I must keep, love it. Same with the padlock I got a few more odd finds I will have to post to find out, maybe the front of a WW2 truck? Will get them up

16 is a wheel hub that allows the wagon/dray/sulky,wheel to turn on the axle 8)

The lock is Victoria Regina (VR with Queens crown) meaning in the reign of Queen Victoria. A government issued lock so its 1901 and below age. VR doesn't stand for Victorian Railways in this instance. Nice finds.

I get my HSC chemistry students to go and find relics like these, they then have to restore the article and show me they understand the chemistry involved in both the rusting and restoration process

When you get them onto Geology tell them if they don't find a decent patch of Gold for you it's a fail.
