Hi everyone, my name is Norv and I live in Sydney. I've come across prospecting after watching an episode of Yukon Gold about two weeks ago. Went out on Saturday and bought my self the Garrett panning kit and I'm now looking to get out into the field :) I've tried to research as much as I can on where to go around Sydney (thanks mostly to this forum) and it looks like it's going to have to be around Bathurst.

Prior to me venturing out, can anyone advise of areas where I'd be able to access with out a 4WD (more than happy to park the car and hike :) ). I also don't have a state forest license (I read on here to apply towards the end of Jan) yet.

Hopefully bump into some of you out in fields.

Welcome to the forum Norvz. Venturing out and taking the challenge to hunt for gold will be a very rewarding experience if you have never done anything like this before.

Just getting out of the big smoke, swirling a pan in a creek, and the anticipation of seeing a few yellow flakes will get you seriously hooked on this addictive hobby.

As a good start point, Coles Bridge on the Turon River is a pretty good spot to start the learning curve. About 300m downstream of the bridge is an extensive set of rock bars. The bars themselves have had a good going over, but the boulders in the stream adjacent to them hold enough colour to keep you interested, and It's a great spot to get in some panning practice.

Best of luck with the hobby and hope luck follows in your shadow,

Cheers Wal.

Hi Wal,

Thanks a lot for that. I will give it a shot this week. Got to start some where :).

I'm still getting my head around all the regulations and rules. Would my understanding of needing approval from Bathurst local council (regarding Coles Bridge) prior to panning, be correct?

By the way would I be correct in guessing you're the same Wal from the WalnLiz youtube videos? If so, great videos, I've learnt heaps :)

Thanks Norv.

Don't need any approvals from councils at Coles Bridge. Only need the permit if in a State Forrest. Only a very small proportion of fossicking areas are within State Forests. You're right with the vid thing Norv, hope some have been of help to you.

Cheers Wal.

Hi Norv,

Welcome to the forum, i'm just new myself but if theres anything you need just ask, the people here are so helpful.'

Cheers, V_8

Thanks V_8. What mad you get into panning?

I went out to Coles Bridge yesterday and came back with a few flakes of gold :)

Spent most my time trying to determine what is and isn't gold and separating the river sand from what I thought was gold.

All worth it though, great to be out of the city.
