Listening on the radio a couple of days ago and heard that the GOVERNMENT  is about to reduce the GST FREE threshold on internet purchases down from $1 000.00 to only a mere $20.00  ,... so if you are about to purchase anything online and it's the GST component (or should I say lack of) that is driving your purchase  , then you better hop to it,... the way they were talking, it will very soon be a level playing field :| . Mind you,... I would only purchase from overseas if I had to because I was too poor 8.( to afford it from here on the mainland.Must admit to buying one detector from overseas  , but I never even realised that there was no GST involved in that purchase  ,... I was already to pay what I thought would be about 80-100 dollars for postage at the time of pick up 8.( ,... but even that was included in the price of the detector back then  ,.... I was pretty poor at the time :( 8.( ,..and I still am :(

Don't get it, are overseas companies going to collect GST and do a BAS?

madness.

No Mate, That import lark gets a sting in its tail,

Over here I won A Bid on Ebay on A Coil @ $99.99 USD then I had to pay $63.50 USD Postage and then Customs Over here hit me $51.50 USD for Handling and IMPORT DUTY, So It cost me Another $115.00 Extra on A 20 year old Coil Grand Total 214.99 USD. A new One would have cost me Less.

So Look out Everyone Coz Them Buggers Bite.

Also online purchasers of overseas goods need to take into account the current and future decline of the value of the Aussie Dollar.
It is going to make purchases much more expensive! :(

It is not the only new or increased tax being proposed.
Currently being debated are the following:

Raise GST rate to 15 % and apply to things currently GST exempt.
Home owners to pay an annual Land Tax levy on their own home estimated at $1500 per house per annum? ( This is under the guise as making house prices more affordable to first time home buyers? ).
Raise Medicare levy to fund ballooning health care costs.
Increasing Capital Gains Tax rates by ending 50 % CGT exemption. ( This will hurt people like us if you invest in gold and silver ingots ).

These are part of a number of proposals in place to raise Government revenue as expenses running the country are a long way short of taxation revenue? ( Lots of wasted money out there ).

It is looking like we need to find more gold or get significant pay rises just to survive on average wages etc.
