Oops. Should have read your write-up more closely (went straight to the pics). So it is a shilling. Are you going to try and clean it up or will you leave it as is?

When you find a really old coin like that, really makes you wonder who dropped it and what they were doing.

Will probably leave it as is, as there is very little detail on it worth preserving - I think the "aged" look does justice to what is a 200+ plus year old coin.

Nice one, I picked up a gothic florin and an 1831 6 pence on the weekend. Funny thing is the beach did have a road to it till the 1900s. My young bloke reckons bandits must have dropped it

Popped back to the same site again today for a few more hours, and between the rusty nails, tin roofing and lead targets, good non-ferrous targets were hard to come by. The pocket watch bezel was yet another deep target that the Nox had no trouble hitting on, and yet another silver sitting hard up against a tree base - what looks to an 1856 Victorian threepence. I had one target which turned out to be a piece tin roofing at nearly 2 foot down (it stayed there), damn this detector goes deep. Another target I ended up leaving in the ground was buried beneath a bunch of large tree roots, didn't ring up high enough for a coin nor small enough.

Just about every hole comes up with old glass and china fragments, some are quite fancy and make for good items in my collection. Probably the most annoying targets are the pieces of thin folded lead sheeting, it's literally everywhere and has to be excavated as it could possibly be an interesting relic or even a gold coin.

I wonder if I can go three days with three old coins, still got lots of ground to cover, just need some patience and ensure I get good coverage.

I feel your pain! Found a 30s house site today and spent 6 hours digging up deep high tone targets for a couple of coins and a tiny little bit of silver. You should try the 6" coil, gives better target separation and doesn't pick up the trash quite so deep!

My family gave me some Minelab gift vouchers for my birthday, so will likely invest in the small coil as I can't see myself needing or wanting the large coil. By the way, nice padlock, should clean up well.

Cool/damp weather and the arrival of Easter Lillies marks the start of relic hunting season, and today I was back to an early 1900's permission to try and scrape up a few more targets. Most of the more obvious targets have been cleaned out previously, so it was a case of digging iffy and deep targets as well as working along fencelines for possible masked targets.

It was really a case of working the coil very slowly to pick out good tones amongst the iron and housing junk, it was quite surprising at how many good targets remained from the last few sessions here. Some of the Military buttons, the dog tag and a large buckle were found hard up against the fenceline, the small HF coil worked a treat at pickjng them out right next the fencing wire. The coins were either on edge or very deep, and easily missed if your swing speed is too fast. Oldest coin was the English 1905 penny followed by a 1911 hp - no silvers this time around.

A surprise find was the complete fob watch, missed last time due to being right next to a shallower alloy can. All up an enjoyable day out, still have a few older house sites yet to explore, so hopefully some good finds to follow.

not sure if anyone has pointed it out, But that pistol you found is a "Hubley Sure-Shot toy cap gun from around the 1940s. good find.

Just a couple of short hunts to post up, one from the other night doing the usual park detecting with the Deus, and one from today at the inn site with the Equinox again.

A couple of nice shillings and thrip made the trip worthwhile, though targets were few and far between. Also today I struggled for good targets, no coins but I did snag a couple of great two piece buttons - the first I think is a South Australian general service or possibly an SA police button made by Firmin & Sons on London, the second is a sports coat button depicting a hunting dog. Only other targets included some musket balls, percussion caps and usual mid 1800's junk.

Had a reasonably uneventful detect the other day with only three Roo predecs coming to light, and lots of unfortunate BB's. The door knobs and H.Gardiner button were from an older site that ai left after having an emcounter with yet another Tiger Snake. By the time I got back to my car the snake was on its way under my car, then I wasn't sure whether it had come out the other side or wrapped itself inder the vehicle somewhere. I could just see the shiny top of the snake on the drivers side, so I quickly jumped in the car on the passenger side and backed it up to check where the snake was at. Luckily it had curled up and missed being run over, though enough of a heart starter to finish the day off. :argh:

Thought I would also post up some pics of a penny collection I purchased for a measly sum a while back. The coins are in varying states of condition, though some of the older Commonwealth coins are in nice condition for their age.

Been a while since I've been out - too hot and too many snakes doing the rounds. In the end I visited a mid 1800's camp site that I had not been to for a long time, mainly due to lack of targets (ie. even junk targets). What you see in the pics are literally the only targets I came across, and the ground was rock hard limiting any deeper finds. Really surprised to find the 1852 Victorian sixpence, it wasn't deep at all and may have surfaced from auger holes when new fence posts were established on the site. I don't think the silver/pearl earring is very old, though it did give off a decent high conductor tone (thinking it may have been a thrip).

This site has produced some fantastic finds over the years, cricket buckles/pins, KG3 silver, plenty of mid 1800's coppers, and a gothic florin - hence why is always too tempting to have another shot.

Yes it is extremely good value for money, especially if you are looking for a first detector bundled with everything you need to get started.

I have detectors all over the place at home, bit of a mess really - need to do some spring cleaning to sort out all the coils and detecting gear.
