Goldpick's 2018 Deus finds

Popped out for a night detect in a park that has produced some good numbers of predecs in the past, this time using the 11" coil to try and infill gaps from last couple of trips. The park is quite rough and the soil is very sandy, meaning easy digging and good condition coins, some of which were literally sitting on the surface. The only silver for the night was the obligatory 1947 florin, which was sitting on edge and not exactly a substantial signal. Haven't had the chance to clean them up yet, though a couple of the commonwealth pennies look to be in good condition - 19 predecs was a good total for the night. The vintage Sidchrome lock was also a pretty cool find!

Thanks Silver, a florin is always icing on the cake for predec hunt. As for the mentioned object, it is hollow and the front isn't an open grill, just a pattern - not sure what it is from.

Today's trip was back to a sawmill site dated back to the 1800's, detecting mainly over where the managers residence would have existed. Detecting here is real tough, tons of ground cover and large fallen branches to deal with, really have to poke around with a small coil to get anywhere near the ground.

First decent target was a not so old roo penny, and things were starting to look bleak until I investigated what was only a snippet of a high tone mixed with other iron tones. All up I pulled four deep 1800's SA dog tags from two seperate holes within a several inches of each other, with the oldest dating back to 1885, being number 2 dog for that district. A couple of feet away a belt buckle plate was unearthed, followed by the Paris buckle, naval button and 1/2 ounce scale weight. Spreading a bit further out, yet another mixed tone target was the fifth dog tag for the day (1887-1888), along with a few more brass buckles (horse tack).

I'd nearly written off this site previously, just goes to show that you can still locate some good finds if you take your time to investigate those not so obvious mixed tone targets (sometimes mistaken as high tone iron falsing or wrap around).

Those dog tags are highly collectable, in fact I have another local detectorist wanting to swap some of the earlier ones to fill out his collection. Hopefully I can organise a detect with him in the near future - yet another local Deus user.
