Getting the kids outside

Hi All,
After a love of the bush when younger I now have a family of my own who need to see more of this country, and spend less time in front of the PS4 and their iPhone. The thought of finding some gold has got them interested, which is a good start.

Ill be buying my first metal detector this week end and have been doing as much research as I can, watched the videos, bought Doug Stone NSW gold atlas, looked at the geological maps, the crown land maps, the fossicking districts.

All I need now is to find a few bits of gold and the kids should be hooked and I can get back to my love of camping. We are heading out in about 2 weeks, Im thinking Sofala, but would take any advice at this point, up to 5 hrs from Sydney would be fine.

Maybe try some panning as well as detecting. Kids love digging in the mud and more people can get involved.

Another spot for a great weekend is Hill End

Hill End is an awesome town to walk around and read the History on all the plaques, the NPWS info centre as you come into town has a mini museum, there is also a great museum (History Hill) on the Sofala Road that the kids would enjoy. Tambaroora creek will produce colour in a pan and there are some great bush tracks to explore with the detector.

Ophir is gaod bush/creek camping retreat with gold, somewhere.

You have convinced me to go to Hill End. The forum topic "What to look for on the goldfields (new to prospecting)" (thank you to Loamer) with some comments about where to use an SDC2300, also added to the Hill End decision. The camp grounds are also excellent with hot showers.
