Was wondering if anyone has had or used the Garmin Topo Australia maps ? How good / detailed are they ?
Not cheap just trying to make sure there worth the dollars they are asking before purchasing
Or any other detailed maps one can use in a garmin GPS ? Have the shonky maps already ;)
Also looking at OzTopo maps ..................... look ok but dearer again than Garmin Maps
:)

Do a search on fleabay for the garmin Topo's.
you'll get a pleasant surprise.

Yes some great buys but mine is the later version Garmin GPS and they won't load. One listing states after July 2015 they made the units "map specific" . Garmins way of stopping non genuine maps being used I guess ?

No haven't actually tried them as in loaded them but going on the sellers item description as below. Have actually emailed several sellers to ask in any case including this particular seller and asked the question if it's worth giving it a go at all?
.
Have noted thru using other map sources that the slightest thing wrong with map protocols and the unit spits them back at you and won't read them.
Appreciate the help in any case
Please Note
Not all Garmin models are supported, please check the above compatibility list
Also if your model was purchased after JULY 2015 it may not work as that was when Garmin started rolling out MAP Specific GPS Units, so that it would compell you to buy maps from Garmin

If your machine is not on the compatibility list, Give V4 a go.

I recently sent a Garmin Rino 650 in as the lcd screen was knackered, out of warranty.
They do not do repairs so I was offered another unit at a good price.
And they even installed my fleabay topo into it.
What nice blokes.

Yes your Rino 650 is on the compatible list .................. one of the sellers is going to test it out for me over the next couple of days so may be in luck.
Re your mapping software on the Rino I had the same same with a windows edition ................... Microsoft approved and gave it the Genuine Windows tick :D
Will see how I go when the seller gets back to me. The Ozi Version V8 stuff looks better than Garmin in any case but is about $50 dearer again

I just bought the V8 for garmin extrac 20X,really good, just slip chip in and away it goes, but as you say not cheap,$239.00 service good received in 24 hrs.

1.25K scale makes the detail really good.

Regards Frank

Yes have Shonky loaded but just far to many tracks not shown for where I go..................... took a few quirks to sort but for free it's a gem. Frank the Oztopo looks the go and have to agree the service I have received even before purchasing is impressive . Bazxa think you find it easier to sort loading internal rather than to card
Again thanks for replies

I purchased the topo maps from ebay (someone in Lithuania) and run them in my nuvi 1390t.
I also run Shonky maps in a nuvi 250w.
Off road some tracks are shown on one and not the other.
Neither one is much better than the other but they are different to the point that when serious offroading I run both at the same time. Ken.

good post this, will look into shonky maps for sure! thanks, was totally unaware of their exsistance.
