Fossicking northern nsw

My names megan and I've recently moved to the tweed area. I would love to try my hand at fossicking because I am fascinated by all types of rocks. I was wondering if anybody knew of any areas I could try around the northern rivers.

Hi Rob & Megan, I am in Nerang, but have been to the northern rivers area a few times. You have good variety down that way, with both gold and gemstones. Drake, Tabulam and Torrington are interesting spots, it helps if you have topo or geo maps of the area.

I'm interested in gemstones, not overly interested to gold. I've never been before and was thinking I could do it with a digging tool and hand. Do u think I need any other equipment? That's a good idea about a map, thanks. I'll see if I can download one.
