Just thought I'd ask how many of us take advantage of the FOLLOW TOPIC button, as I do this regularly and receive Emails to let me know when new posts have been made. I find that by FOLLOWIN a TOPIC I can keep in touch with what's going on with mates or interesting posts as the action happens and as I get time to be online. Just wondering what others do in relation to this button ?

Not me silver,
I've been meaning to and now that you've
reminded me, I'm starting today.
Cheers Steve

Same here silver, when there's topics I'm interested in I follow them that way, as you say it keeps you in touch and up to date with that topic/post, it's a great feature on the forum.

Ive never used it myself, i see a 'new post' in yellow and click on it .... However every so often i seem to miss something ... I guess the system skips a beat sometimes

I'm the same as you Sandta, I just look for any new posts.
Does following a topic only notify you once that there has been a post, or do you receive an email notification for every new post?

Every new post gets one for the topic that your following(posts don't happen all that often(depending on the topic I suppose),...I just see what's going on when I look at my emails to know to log on to the Forum If I need /or want to and delete them as I see them so they don't build up lots,...you don't need to open them at all unless your expecting a PM from someone as you can see what the topic is without opening the email.

Yes I have used this facility for sometime now, but recently I have been getting large amount of unwarranted emails from people and business that I have nothing to do with. I delete them and checking my delete file, it shows that it has been happening for a least a month. Ironic that I have been a member for nearly a year and not seen this activity before.
So, my question is;
Now that the forum has been sold off shore, what security is being offered to us about our email addresses being released to a third party???

Peter.

I used to get a few unwanted E=mails(not sure where from), but since blocking the sender I see them no more.

Peter.
Excellent idea for a new thread.

I have had a look to see if you can follow a topic and not receive an email notification,...it seems to me that there may not be a choice in the way of a DO NOT RECEIVE NOTIFICATIONS BY EMAIL FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS button to press in your profile page under SUBSCRIPTIONS as when you click on said subject it takes you out of your profile and to your subscription page with no opportunity to make said Email notification adjustments without unsubscribing to a particular thread, so in other words it seems to be that if you don't want to get the Email you have to unsubscribe to the thread completely, which of course doesn't allow you to follow it as a topic,...Maybe one of the moderators could approach Harri to get this matter rectified, that way we can subscribe to topics without Email notification of postings as a choice on the Forum.
If it isn't a choice then those of us without the ability to remember the names of all the threads and postings that they like(without getting all those Email notifications) can't just log on and see all the topics they would like to follow,...in other words we would have to troll the topics every time to try and find the subjects of interest we may like to visit for research or discussion.
Or if there is already a way to do what I'm saying ,in place, could someone please post how to achieve this result,....and still allow for private mail to get through.

The exact same security that was previously offered by myself is now being offered by Harri (a very high standard). I assure you that he's not going to compromise his own forum.

Harri's been at it a long time and knows exactly what he's doing, so any increase in spam is likely to be just a coincidence. It could have just as easily come from that other forum you've recently joined which is actually hosted overseas unlike Prospecting Australia ;)

Hi Nuggett, good to see you up and about(so to speak), just a thought about following things(slightly off subject), is there anyway to make the forum update itself as a new post comes in that would normally show up in new posts when you log on, just that I have to open PA each time I want to see if there is a new post. Maybe it could show up on the top bar as a number or something so that if you are say looking at the weather on the meteorology site you could see that there was a new posting on PA if it was up, as it would be visible in the PA box and when you went back on it would already be updated with the new post without having to open up PA again,...It would only have to do it for the thread that you have open at the time,...just a thought.

Thanks silver, I've been moving house this last week so things have been pretty hectic, worst part is I still have several weeks before the internet will be put on (bloody phone line not connected :().

Regarding new posts, the forum utilises cookie files to track new topics and new posts, unfortunately with this system it's capabilities are fairly limited. One way we could improve on this function would be to switch the forum over to database tracking, this is certainly not impossible to implement but Harri would need to consider and weigh up the benefits vs the amount of work involved in implementing such a system.

Another thing you could look at using is an RSS Feed Reader app, adding https:// www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/extern.php?action=feed&type=rss to your app would display all recent posts made on the forum. Feed apps vary in functionality and there may be one or two that will provide the type of ability you're looking for.

Cheers,
Nugget
