2nd that. as for a bit pricey, it actually works out much cheaper in the long run as a small tub of cream lasts me a few years.

You only need a tiny bit around your eyes, mouth and nose. The flies still buzz around you but they don't land.
Ill second that. Got a small tub a couple of years ago and still half full.

Natures Botanical is actually a good skin moisturiser - unlike most others.
The gals like it for that alone - don't need to wash it off later. WA bushies swear by it.

Gday

Did some research on flies awhile back as I figured that if they were so attracted to us by our smell or for some other reason that there must also be some smell that will be repugnant to them that would keep them away, anyway it turns out there are many things that I didn't know about flies.

Firstly the flies that we get the most bothered by is what is called the "bush fly", and it is different to the house fly and some other species, the house fly will happily come into a house or structure and stay there as long as it can, same as the big ass blowflies, the bush fly however does not like to stay inside and will usually come in and straight out or stick to a window or screen and try to escape.

The bush fly finds you very quickly because it can smell the carbon dioxide in your breath, that's why as soon as you go out into the open they are in your face, and they just fly up wind following your breathe, and by the way the really annoying ones are the female flies (no surprise there) and the reason is that they have to get proteins straight away after they hatch or their eggs they lay will be barren, the proteins are things like sweat, blood, snot and so on, all the things that could be on our face :drooling:

Also have you noticed that they are really frenzied in the hottest part of the day, its because the little *******s are solar powered, their body has no cooling mechanism so the hotter it gets the more active they become, that's why they will kamikaze straight into your eyes, ears and mouth, as soon as it cools down they are nowhere to be seen as their body temperature drops, they disappear into the trees and bushes get under the leaves and go to sleep.

There is nothing that will keep them at bay for long, I have tried all the remedies, botanicals and all, while they will work for a short time as soon as you move about and start to sweat breathe they will be back, as I said they don't like to go inside anything so I have found there are a couple of things that you can do that does help, the obvious one is wear a fly net, second wipe your face regularly with a non scented wet wipe to remove sweat, wipe of any blood from skin wounds and cover them up, wear a long sleeved shirt and gloves, wear a hat with a cowl piece out the front or one like a legionaire type one (which I prefer), as it also has the flaps at the front that you can cover your face with if they are really bad, as they will mostly fly in and back out as they don't like being inside anything.

Apart from being annoying they can cause some serious damage to your eyes and long term problems, as they also have a liking for :poop: and apart from that you can also hurt yourself when you are waving madly at them and whack yourself in the head with your pick, sure I am not the only on who has done that :awful:

HAHA nice write up stayer I came to a conclusion flies had a morbid fear of mozzies because
there seems to be a 20 minute turn around from swarm of flies to mozzies. Them bush flies certainly stick.

Natures botanicals is the best hands down and by a country mile.
Handled the Echuca rural fly swarm easily. Didnt even have to wear my fly net ever again, amazing stuff.

Gday

Flies, while I hate them mainly just because they are really bloody annoying, they can do damage to your eyes as well, I had an incident many years ago while prospecting on my own about 100ks from town, I woke up one morning with my eyes glued shut, so glued up in fact that I had to feel about for my water bottle wash my eyes out before I could get them open properly, and when I did it was like I was looking through a smoke haze, I made the immediate decision to leave as I was on my own and had a longish drive to town to get some medicine for it, firstly I didn't know what the problem was and was more concerned that if it got worse I might not be able to drive myself to town anyway.

I headed to town an went to the chemist for eyes drops, I treated myself and then decided to go home, the issue cleared up but I was told that it was probably from the flies and whatever bacteria they were carrying getting in to my eyes, I have had eye issues ever since, back in the day I didn't wear a fly net but even if your have botanical cream or whatever on your face the little turds will kamikaze in and bounce off your eye balls when they are frenzied so that is all it will take to leave behind some nasties to infect your eyes, so better safe than sorry.

What insect I hate even more than flies is the "midges" or "sand flies", they can make your trip a misery if you don't realise they are about, then you get bitten all about the place, they are tiny and are usually in swarms, hiding mainly in the creek lines and under the trees, they get up under your shirt sleeves and bite around your wrists, under your hat and bite your forehead and ears, around your waist if you shirt is out, and even right up you trouser legs, they will even bite you right up to your nuts if you are going commando, so you end up scratching like a dog to get relief from the itching and end up looking like you have the plague, I know people who have ended up in hospital due to bites from these little suckers, so same deal cover your arms and wear gloves, tuck your trouser legs into your socks, tuck in your shirt, and lather on the botanical cream or spray on rid, both work well on them.

cheers

Hello

About 8 years ago my missus and I visited the Gloucester National Park to walk around the giant karri trees and enjoy the scenery. We were aware of the march fly problem at that time and so wore long sleeved shirts etc but the buggers were still getting through in some parts of our attire, so we cut the walk short and went back to the car after brushing off as many of the buggas as we could. Shortly after getting in the car, and commenting to each other about how prolific the march flies are, a van arrived with international tourists. The 2 that got out were so obviously about to have a bad time, wearing shorts and sleeveless/tank tops with ankle socks, that we held off driving away until we witnessed the experience. Soon enough they disappeared around a bend.

I still feel terrible about not warning them while simultaneously chuckling at the memory. The speed at witch they were returning from around the bend and how often their arms were waving/slapping themselves was a sure indication they will remember west Oz fondly.

Frank.
