Are you using corrugated pool hose for the intake?

When I was testing mine for the first time I used pool hose and it leaked,

Now I have stiff but proper intake hose and the lay flat clamped directly to the camlocks on the out let hoses.

A few drips here and there should not be a show stopper?

Yeah I'm using corrugated pool hose for the intake but it's the delivery side that's leaking which is a rubber type layflat hose clamped directly onto an aluminium camlock.

It's definitely leaking between the layflat and the camlock, and not from the camlock connector / seal itself.

If the hose is the proper size for the camlok it shouldn't leak. My hoses are a bitch to get onto the hose tail on the camlok, I have to lube them up with soap to get them on.
If you're worried about it leaking just run some silicone between the hose and the camlock, clamp it up and let it cure before use.

Cheers
Mick

Hey nugget just a suggestion from a plumber! Wrap some Teflon tape around the connection between the cam lock and hose before tightening the clamp up, might do the job, let us know, good luck

Nuggert,
to be successful you will need 1 high quality stainless steel clamp.
if leaking there is a diameter issue.
Is it 25mm or 38mm
38mm 2 clamps
if still leaking cut a piece off lay flat and wrap it around outside of hose already on camlock put clamp on do not over tighten.
Nugget I am baffled as to why it is leaking really

please just put up pic of set up.
cheers
TheSmithy.

I think I may have worked out the problem.

The clamp below (indicated by the arrow) is done up as tight as it allows, I'm now starting to think this clamp was designed for a thicker hose and therefor can't be adjusted to the required tightness.

I added the wire type clamp (above right) that came with the pump but it still leaked but I'm fairly confident that if I change the clamps over to the type below it should solve the problem.

I appreciate the help guys.

Cool nugget, if that doesn't work and you have a scrap of lay flat hose left over cut a piece to place all the way around the connection then do the clamp up, this will bulk it out and help the clamp do up better. Certainly the clamp that is done right up is a much better and heavy duty type and I would imagine would hold more pressure than the cheaper one

Nugget, i used this type of hose clamp as it doesn't damage/cut into the hose (the slots and screw mechanism in the one you pictured)

Hi nugget , I also had problems with clamping lay flat hose that always leaked. .. I fixed it by putting silastic on the inside of the pipe and then clamped it.. gave it a day too dry and no problems since.. :)

Thanks guys, I'll get some new clamps tomorrow and will probably give the silicone idea a go also.

Nugget , I made the same mistake ,if you get slightly larger clamps that easily slip over your hose , it wont tighten. They are very good clamps .
Take them back and get the right size - one down

No need for silicone

Agree if its the right diameter shouldn't leak. Either that or the clamp. Should not be any requirement to use silicone so don't cover up the problem, right clamp should do it.

Hi Nugget,

Coming from a mechanical back ground I can tell you why it is leaking.
Big Bryza is spot on. :) :)
.
The lay flat hose has a thin wall. When you tighten the clamps they form a small ripple in the hose under the clamp mechanism.
A few home made aircraft have come to grief because of this and it is also the reason that poly pipe use a cone type set up.
What you have to do is put a length of rubber hosing with an internal diameter the same as the external diameter of the lay flat hose.
Make it wide enough to accept 2 clamps which have the screw clamps placed diagonally to each other.
If the Barb that you are placing the hose onto has ridges with a sharp edge, wrap the barb with plumbers tape.
.
Take note of the post by Reek's.
.
The clamps have a curled edge.
Why this is done is to prevent the clamp cutting the hose when it expands under pressure. :)
The wire clamps are good for this as well. Just position it with the ridge on the barb underneath between the wires.
.
I take it that these pumps do not create a massive amount of pressure. I do not know the formula but
moving a column of water up 20 meters does take a bit of force.

Thanks headbut and Twapster, will see of they have the next size down report back.

P.S. This is how bloody good our members are. Tonight I've received an offer of suction hose from bisho via text message and a phone call from headbut (while writing this post) regarding the clamps, you guys are legends in my book and I appreciate you both taking the time to go that one step further in assisting me. And to everyone who has replied and offered advice, I thank you all very much.

Cheers,
Nugget

I dont know if this is any help, but to prime my water pump now a days i have to hold tight the intake hose until there is pressure, snapped off connection while at shoalhaven, if you have a slight pressure leak, and this is a mere bubble, there will be a no go for the pump

Thanks Charlie, the suction side appears to be fully sealed, it's the delivery side that needs addressing.

im no help to you sorry nugget the wash machines i use arnt as portable as your sluice, therefore sikaflex goes on the hoses before they are used 8)
ps if you use a hard hose instead of lay flat for outlet and have no joy with pushing your cam lock tails in even after they have been soaked in hot water try the tail pipe of your car, shove your hose up it for 3-5 min bump up the revs a bit and it will go nice and soft to push in your hose tail, once hose tail is in dunk it in water to shrink it around hose tail throw on clamp and your good to go 8)

dam that sounded so sexual :8 border line wrong now that i re-read it...oh well to late, allready hit the submit button

LOL,
Thanks Nugget. That is some serious clamping force there. I also did note that the screws are wound right out in your pictures as well.
.
Sorry, I failed to mention that. OOps.
