Fantastic find! Can you tell us the type of detecting you were doing? Park or private property? The Half crown is a target I have yet to find and that one is a beauty - a red letter day for sure!

Thanks Paul
I was using a CTX in a sporting oval area. Looking for pre-decs mainly. Not bad for the only valid pre-dec I got that day.

Great find, I'm sure that's on many detectorists bucket list. Canberra seems to be a breat place for pre-decs, going by what finds I have see across a couple of forums. :)

Top find detectist! That is one old coin.. Looks like the CTX is doing the job for you. Keep it up!

I'm glad I've had a few wines to soften the blow, I haven't gotten one of those yet(not even an Aussie one), imagine the whipping whoever lost that would have gotten. Big loss back then but an even bigger find here now, super lucky job walking over that heavy shining orb of delight, Detectist Extraordinaire. PROUD !

It is nice to know they can be found.......am wondering how common the were back in the day? Or if they were only bought out at the races to impress the ladies.

Like the quater-penny as well - lawn mower cut? Or maybe the cutting of coins of any denomination was common. Must have been an 'oh bugger' moment when you rubbed the date on that one.

Bet you will be returning to that location for a very slow grid of the paddock. :p

Thanks guys
Yep - pretty happy. And will go back. The sporting oval is still in use so we only did the non-sport related part of it. I will return to it although between the two of us over about 1 1/2 to 2 hours we only got a total of two valid pre-decs and few other coins.

The only coins that were normally clipped are those made of silver and gold in the medieval days and earlier.

Nice find mate, I hop one washes a shore for me

Hi SA_bogan, I don't know about your area, but down here in Tassie, clipping of coins into several pieces was a common practice until the shortage of coin ended in the 1850s.

Very lucky to find a Half Crown indeed, good work detectist :)

I can only think of a couple of ovals in Canberra that's really old enough to deliver one of those puppies!

Well done again :)
