This maybe a stupid question but has anyone tried a yabbie pump in the water at the beach?

If so, was it successful?
That will be a hell of a lot of yabby pumping!... Sort of like looking for coins in a park with a specialised tool...
Man going detecting ... Check.
Equipment ... Shovel ... Check.
Area ... Park ... Check.

Strategy.... Dig holes randomly till sick of chewing on dirt to see if it has any metal components...
Outcome...Too many ring pulls stuck in teeth ...
Expensive dentist bill...

Decides to invest in yabby pump to look for articles on beach..... That tastes salty!

Use your detector!

if you could get enough yabbies you might have a nice little sideline going there :)
i was once told the only stupid question is the one not asked. it may work ok if your limiting yourself to in and around the water line. it is another piece of equipment you have to carry around . the only way to find out for yourself is to give it a go if your successful you will start a new trend :)

Ok - how we got to yabbie pumps from a Sovereign GT test run I am unsure ... :) But back to the topic - my son took the GT down to a local beach for a session to see if he preferred it to the Excaliber... Here is what he found:

No silver coins but he did get a 9k gold and sapphire ring

A chunky 925 silver ring

As well as an assortment of moderns, bling jewelry and the obligatory spoon

And of course a bunch of trash

I will let him tell you what he thought but I think it works well and another nice haul inc some gold without a GPX 5000! :)

Amazing difference in quality of finds since changing over to the current detectors, so how did your son find the gt, surely he won't admit it is better than the excalibur. ;)

I must say that the gt was going to be my first choice. Pros is that they sounds are very similar to the exlaibur when going over targets and even threshold changes are the same. The control box bein mounted under the arm is also good as I could swing all day and night that's how well balanced it is. I also really like the straight shaft. The only real difference is that there are more setting options on the gt than the excal hick is good and bad. Also didn't like the constant threshold changing when going into water as the excal stays pretty much the same from dry to wet. All and all I can't find a reason for someone not to buy the sovereign as it's a great machine and has great depth. In saying that the excal is still just as good off bit better but has a lot more weight and isn't really setting up to search for long periods they say it is assembled. Still waiting on a chest mount from the USA and has been over a month

I must say either detector will be a good choice. You can sway her with the idea of her receiving the rings you find :)

Hi there,

some really nice finds. I've recently purchased a Sovereign GT and am yet to get my head around discrimination/notch settings. I've been digging up so many pulltabs and bottle tops. I've just invested in a pin pointer as well. When you hit the beach again, are you able to post a pic of the settings you used?

Cheers,

Frank

Here they are again

The only difference is the volume would be turned all the way up.

You can hear the difference in sound when detecting targets - especially bottle caps and pull tabs - just takes some hours using the dectector - you will walk over a lot less if you are walking in the right area. If you are getting caps and pull tabs these items are very light and aren't found where the jewelry and silver coins are located. I get a few now and then but I can predict them from the sound and in target rich areas I give them a miss.

when i used it i didnt have the sensitivity on auto but everthing else was the same

We bought an xterra sounds like we made a boo boo and should of gone for a sovereign. Tried it a couple of times on the beach and the signals drove us to distraction. Must learn a bit more me thinks.
Great finds and inspiring. cheers :)

Just have to wind back the sensitivity until it stops chattering, especially if you cannot ground balance enough to negate the effects of the salt water/wet sand. Also run in discrimination mode vs all-metal, that will also help, just don't expect to achieve great depths on targets. PI and multi-frequency detectors are really a must if venturing anywhere near wet areas of the beach.
