That's pretty cool DD, must have taken a while to gain his/her trust?
They say the best way to deal with swooping Magpies in you local area is to feed them, they don't forget a face and will not swoop.
We have a few around our place and the first Spring we were here (4 years) we were getting swooped when doing the front garden, I put some beef stirfry strips up on the fence where they attack from and have not been swooped since, they are cheeky but friendly little fella's once they get to know you :)

Great fan of the Magpie, they are absolute characters once you get to know them, we had been feeding a pair of birds for many years and each season they would bring the new youngsters about for a feed and introductions. We fed them very sparingly, the neighbour three times a day, guess who gets the loving now!
Love their all morning song. :p

The magpie song (warble) is so unique I will never tire of it. We feed about 20 multiple times a day. One we raised and released is stubborn and demands being fed to the point of landing on my shoulder and won't take no for an answer. He sits on my shoulder and comes inside to supervise the meal I give him his bit 1st when we're outside and then feed the others. They'll warble in the afternoon as well, at the moment their busy gathering sticks and grass to build nests so swooping season is just around the corner.

Very intelligent birds, as are all the Corvidae family.

100% true they recognize faces and it's a hoot to hear one "talk". In our street growing up, there was a semi-tamed magpie named "Jack" that would bark like a dog even.

Once you bond with one it is not uncommon for them to bring you gifts, would be very nice to receive one of the shiny gold variety, however, they really do seem to enjoy bringing you clothes pegs! :present:

Love ya Maggie Doc.
We are very fortunate that we live next to a wildlife corridor and have the enjoyment of kookaburras, magpies, corellas, parrots,King Parrots, blue headed honeyeaters and 20 or so yellow crested cockys that enjoy a feed each morning and afternoon (that's why I am not retired as I have to work to pay for all the bird food :) ;) ).
Love them to pieces.

Feed him Dr.... feed him.

Quickly.
before it's ..... :poop: too late !

He has fed him I would imagine. Otherwise I do not think he would be sitting on his leg like that. Incredibly smart bird who know who their friends are. Agree with all you guys.

I have three magpies that come to my place, last spring they had a young baby, as soon as it learnt to fly they taught it to tap on my window and beg for food.
Quite often the male one spots me in the kitchen window and soars in lands on the back deck and looks at me demanding food. Once he has a good feed he calls
the other two.

I made a deal with my magpies, they are to keep the pesky Indian Myners out of my yard as they were crapping on my car, in return i would feed them fresh
meat scraps and cheese. 18 months into the contract all things are going well, no Bird **** on the roof of my car! Magpies very happy with the food, and water
i supply. Now very tame, not scared of my lawn mower, not scared of my car. They even watched me do a gold melt with the blow torch. ;)

mr D i hope you dont mind if i add my pic to your thread . this is from 4 or 5 years ago mum ( betty the butcher bird is sitting on the ground in front of my and this is her baby she brought to me ) i gave mum a bit of meat every now and then for months ,then when the little tacker left the nest she brought it over to me , some mornings i would have her sitting on my leg and the little fella sitting on my arm . i love the butcher birds call on a morning some mornings if they were no where in sight i could go out the front and call them and within a few minutes they would turn up .
