Difference between Mono and DD coils? When to use?

Thanks for all the great feedback I have given them all a run to see what feels better and as you say they all have advantages and the country around here there is opportunities to use them all so I think my go to so far is the 17x11 and use the others where appropriate.

As a newbie I'd like to know what is the difference between mono and DD coils

What are the pro's and cons of each

Is one easier to use than the other specifically for a beginner

I am new to the hobbie having just purchased a gpx5000

Without getting nailed by someone who has another idea, as a noobie you should run a mono and as long as you are in fine gold, enhanced, or sensitive smooth.

The mono coil allows for very good sensitivity and because the outer edge of the coil is the sensitive part of the coil, it allows for easier location of the target for pinpointing as you can push the coil back and forth to the target and locat it easier.

DD are used for really mineralized ground, and under power lines, the detection zone on the DD is through the centre and can be a bit hard to pinpoint a target for newbies and can be less sensitive to smaller gold.

Stick with the mono as youve got one of the best detectors for small and large gold and to suit a mono.

Once you get the hang of it and you then find some terrible ground you may want to try the DD

Just ask Mr google, lots of information on coils about the place, suffice to say both types of coils have their place and particular strengths and weaknesses, to add more confusion there are also other types of coils like concentric coils that are also available for minelab sd/gp and gpx models, the new gpx 6000 also comes out with a mono and dd coils, but have a read below and that should answer most of your questions.

If you are running a gp or gpx detector just keep in mind that if you are running a dd coil you can use the discrimination feature, meaning it can help you avoid some of the unwanted metal targets, you can also switch it to mono and run the coil as a pseudo mono where only one side of the coil is active but more sensitive than using it just in the dd mode, also a little known fact about a dd coil is that its most sensitive down the center line of the coil so if you push it forward under a bush for instance and a target is there you may not hear it, the dd coil is best when swung in the usual side to side motion.

A mono coil is more sensitive around the perimeter of the coil so it would hear the target more easily when pushed under bushes so depending on the terrain and ground mineralisation then you can decide which coil best suits your purpose, also its considered that in most cases a mono coil will have better depth than the same sized dd coil, but again that can depend on the mineralisation content of the ground as the mono will get very noisy and even if detecting deeper it will produce far more noise than the dd so you may not be able to hear the target responses anyway, so using the dd may be the better option in that case.

If you have the standard commander coils that came with the machine...start with them. There is almost no ground that a 5k and a 11" mono can't handle.
