Did the "Garfunkel" character in Detectorists have a musical ancestor?

For those who have enjoyed the BBC series Detectorists, check out this video of Spike Jones and his City Slickers, probably from a soundie in the mid to late 1940's.

The resemblance of the bloke at 3:15 in to the Garfunkle character in Detectorists is uncanny.
