I remember when these things used to cost thousands of dollars to buy, now they only cost in the hundreds. I guess business isn't too flash these days on such units.

I also remember when some idiot in the UK managed to sell a whole lot of these to the Iraqis to locate landmines, needless to say they didn't work very well, and last I heard they trying to track the guy down and throw him in prison.

Here is one of many reports related to the above scam.

I hate those things with a Passion, Over here last year they Jail some SOBs for selling things like that to militaries all over the world as IUD and explosive detectors, for $100,000 AUD each,
I posted the News links on many forums.

My Anger goes from 0 to about 200 in about 0.4 seconds, heaven forbid if I ever come face to face with someone selling those things,

I better take a step back coz I don't want to say something I regret,

John

Although the condemnation of eBay scam detectors is warranted, out of hand dismissal of the basic principle of it is not. Magnetic resonance is well known effects and used in quite numerous of Hi Tech aplications. If I really ged bored I may have a go on designing a magnetic resonance detector. It may have a detecting range of about 2 mm but it will pick gold only, nothing else. Just because there is a scam on ebay does mean that underlining principle is wrong.
Give me few milion dollars and 5 years and I may come up with something that can detect 1 gram of gold 50 cm down. Mind you, it will be bit heavy and you may have to drag bottle of liquid nitrogen with you, but it may just work.
