Hi guys , you've all probley heard this question before or pondered it you self but I was wondering about detecting inside mine tunnels would this be a productive exercise to find possibly missed gold ? or o over the mullock heaps around them , Ive plenty of reef mines in the area and am confused as where to start looking , a dozer has just cleaned the track and I also thought I could just walk the track as new round has been opened up any input would be greatly appreciated , cheers .

I'm echoing Willo's post, just don't do it.
Mines can cause you all kinds of issues with asphyxiation from the buildup of carbon dioxide and other chemicals (mistake a leeching pit for a mine and you are in for lots of pain from Mercury and/or arsenic) in the mines. Other issues also are that, in some places, these have been used as dumping grounds for all kinds of hard rubbish (Asbestos, 'nuff said) by those already ignorant enough to do such things with little thought about those dangers (let alone a potential mine collapse).
If you think mobile reception is patchy in some areas, try getting a signal out in the bottom of one if you fall down a shaft and break an arm/leg.
Mullock heaps, where not heritage listed (do your homework), are not so bad provided you exercise caution in the handling of the raw material as (you did do your homework first re heritage listing?) some heaps of refuse were made after being fed through (mercury laced, not sure there?) copper headed crushers and steam engines.
The dozer opened up ground looks like a good bet though and where I (a newbie myself doing the homework prior to actually grabbing a magic electric wand :lol: ) would want to start.

Cool thanks guys , I forgot about the oxegen levels too , and the more I look at the dozed area the more interested im getting excitied about it , seems the track was put in around the 60,s and has cut through a quarzt reef which was intill then buried in the hill , Ive walked all around the area and have found lots of rose quartz and iron stone amoungst the decomposed granite and it seems that it has washed down the track for around 100m creating a dry river in a way , hopefully I"ll have the cash for a new detector by then end of the week and go have a stisky , thanks again for the info , cheers Scamp
