Well seems like that detecting app was just about the most blatant attempt at stealing info, blatant and brazen glad they were banned from here. Probably some chinese mining company? Who knows but glad the BS detectors discrimination was working well on this occasion well done for banning that scammer mods.

Almost as bad as the "Microsoft" employees that call to help and "fix" you computer for you, oh and the "insurance" companies looking to help with that accident you never had.

Scumbags!

Got a fake Westpac text yesterday directing me to a professionally built login page

Beware

Some scams look quite legit hey mate. First time Microsoft called I hung up and called the real company and they said they never ever call customers.

Had an insurance one the other week call me and pretended to be an easy picker elderly person for them to rip. Told them the accident was so bad that I couldn't remember my name or address, or the injury I had, they then asked if anyone else was there that could help me remember, lol. Wasted about 15 minutes of their time so that was a few less victims they could call heh.

Told a Microsof one the other day that they deservered a bullet in their cranium with a bunch of other 4 letter words.

My next approach will be "hello AFP internet scam office" how can I help you?

Though if you can bait them a while it really pisses them off having their time wasted. :)

The person who posted the initial thread is probably this person who has been contributing to the GO-DETECT FB page:

She looks like a legit metal detectorist who perhaps was involved in the development or testing. I think the thread was spam, but I don't know if I believe it's a scam. Though what do the developers have to gain by making it available...

I enjoy the phone calls, string them along, see how crazy I can get before they hangup. Few weeks back it was a security mob, saying theres been breakins in my area. I strung her along so far, that she said yes I could have a lazer system, to burn theives.....all she wanted was to confirm a date for a rep to visit. Other times I ask them what they are wearing, what position they like etc. One accepted my offer to cook dinner, but hungup before we could set a date.

Lol....Yeh my BS detector works a treat also as long as I make sure I 'scam balance' it properly...... it will run smoothly over new 'genuine ground' without falsing.

This allows me to increase the gain/sensitivity to make sure I hear those faint 'scam target' signals.

Good find GD ;)

Beware

Got same one Wally , went to a mob in Poland , if you still have the mail send to [email protected] they are trying to clean them up

Cheers

Well then, it seems I was sucked in by the go detect app.
it's now uninstalled so a lesson well learned.
:| :(

Scam callers, the best rebuttal I ever heard was to pretend you were an officer/detective attending a crime scene. There's plenty of room for giggles and demands for info there. Sadly I wait for them just for some free self entertaining.

Has anyone done any checking on the App or is the concern a generic one because of concerns regarding its ability to track a person based on their phone movements? There are quite a few such apps available for phones with the focus being exercise based.

I even have one that I can activate on my watch to track Runs, Walks, etc. If I activate it, it definitely sends data back to my phone and computer via the net. I guess the difference with this one is it is could be targeting, where you make finds, etc, while detecting.

My read was definite spam ... only potential scam. Many many apps out there that fund their develop via free supply of basic services, but charging for premium. My gold diary will never be accessed by others electronically, as although it has gps coords recorded, they are ink on paper and not bits and bytes.

I baited a Nigerian spammer a few years back. :D
Strung him along for a few weeks then sent a "Scanned Copy" of my bank account.
He was so greedy it took only 10 minutes for him to open it.
Biggest mistake he ever made.
Don't stuff with a tech. ;)
We bite.

Better add the other bit.

Get the, "We offer new flone. Velly, velly good.

My 17 year old young bloke who is ADHD and can hardly speak a word but most of all, Loves a chat on the phone.
They do not call back.
Funny That.

Often wonder if Minelab track GPS input with the 7000.....claiming its a warranty thing? Its certainly possible.

How would you expect them to do that unless they have access to your computer, as I didn't think that the Z had comms Tx capability, else why need to connect via USB?

Yep paranoid I think.

Ummm....its satellite GPS Pablo, if we can access on our machine, so can they from theirs with tracking on machine serial numbers.

know what i mean? Just like a smart phone with the AFP

They dont need usb access, thats only there to load data onto your PC from your GPS communications.

I dont expect you will understand though ;)

Hey Metamorphic,

My understanding of GPS receivers is that they listen to the time and position of satellites on the GPS network, and use calculations to triangulate your position. I don't think they actually transmit anything to the satellite, as the juice needed to transmit would chew through the batteries in no time at all.

Thus the GPS network theoretically does not know where GPS receivers are located. This, of course, is the official explanation. Take it with a grain of salt, the possibility remains that a method for locating individual receivers exists, as this would be extremely useful to the US armed forces in time of war, and they designed and launched the system in the first place.

In summary, I disagree, but only somewhat.
