G'day everyone, Ben from country Victoria. Absolutely green to prospecting. Enjoying the thought of taking the family out camping and doing some detecting. (even it is only an old horse shoe :p )

If anyone has some suggestions for a good detector for a newbie I am all ears. I am currently considering the SDC2300 as a Christmas present to myself. :D
Also looking at a basic /simple metal detector for the young blokes birthday, something to get him started and interested. For this I have been looking at the Gofind 40 or 60. Just for him to go over school yards and playgrounds.

Thanks everyone, looking forward to learning a lot.

G'day Ben. Another newbie here. I am also in country Victoria :)
Way out west of Ballarat.
I'm also trying to research detectors. So far I'm pointing towards the Garrett AT Gold.
My son has a Minelab Go-Find 60 which your son would enjoy. It finds metal quite deep and is very sensitive for a $399 machine.

Anyway, welcome :Y:

G'day Ben welcome to PA the 2300 is a great machine and if your on good ground with shallow gold your on a winner. Can't say much about the gofind I've never used one but I'm sure it's a good starting point for a young person. All the best in your hunt and adventures.

You will not go wrong with a sdc2300 a very easy machine to use and a great way to stay keen. If you are interested I have a go find 40 that has been hardly used that I want $150 for. Pm me if interested. Jim

Reynard,
I think you may need to PM him as he only has two posts.

Welcome and I hope that you enjoy the search with your young bloke.

If buying a new 2300, I would see if the shop could through in a 40 or 60 for the children. you never know if you don't ask.
