For better or worse, this stuff is going to remain a part of our lives (unless you go off grid), so parents need to strike a balance - which can be difficult when they see you saying one thing and doing another. We don't allow our 2 year old to watch TV but he recently began demanding the ipad because mummy dearest is always bloody using it - so we let him have a play over breakfast and at dinner time (about an hour each day). Honestly, I'd prefer he didn't play with it at all but I'm not the one feeding and changing the nappies so I won't complain too much. The ipad is more a toy than a computer, and it doesn't teach actual computing skills as some parents might claim.

I was an active kid in the 80s, but still spent a lot of time on the C64 as a kid and then the internet and BBS from about 1995 onwards. My parents were always on my back about the amount of time I spent on the computer and in hindsight, they were probably right. Their complaining and lack of suggesting a family alternative didn't help though. So, as my kids get older, I'll try to balance all this technology stuff out by taking them out to do things.

Their all checking if they have enough money in their bank accounts to buy a burger, which is the next most important thing in their miserable existence.

Here is the answer (and I claim copywrite), you heard it first here, BLUE TOOTHED HEADS UP DISPLAY GLASSES ( WITH MIC & SLIDE ADJUST EARBUDS ) ,... these kids dont need to look when they type, and it wont be long till you'll only need to speak instead of type as a given, so it'll be device in pocket and blue tooth glasses on ( no kneck problems then ).
I can be contacted via this forum to work out a remunerative contractual agreement before production starts. ;) 8) :D

I think a lot bury their heads in these devices so they don't actually have to interact with other people, they stick the ear phones in and walk along looking at there phones from less than one foot away, they never make eye contact with anyone else, they are totally oblivious to everything around them usually, I was driving through Manly the other day asnd there was hardly one single person walking along not looking at one of these things without ear buds in, they look pretty silly too doing it, like zombies or something. They won't even make eye contact and say sorry when they walk straight into you because they weren't looking where they were going. Talk about opium for the masses.

I don't know why kids need phones anyway, never did when most of us were young and we survived into adulthood.

imagine the neck issues, that these young people will have, by time the time they are 30. Young guy commenting on a meme, oblivious to the cute chicky infront of him.

Don't forget the thumb issues from all the texting, one of my friends has this really hot friend who only ever texts, some will be 20 pages long (yep insane), I noticed the size of her thumbs one day and had a good laugh about it, they are like she should be using them for some type of olympic sport. Told the friend to have a look at them next they caught up, she reckons she nearly fell off her chair trying not to laugh. They aren't friends anymore because of all the texting..

I recorded a song for a band many many years ago and it was about this sort of stuff and too much gaming, the chorus went like this, "I've sprained my thumbs, I've sprained my thumbs, I've sprained my thumbs, I've sprained my thumbs, I've sprained my thumbs, I've sprained my thumbs, I've sprained my thumbs, I've sprained my thumbs arrrrggggghhhhh".

Along the same lines .... along with every other type of addiction - drug, gambling, sex, shopping, alcohol etc, China have had "Internet Addiction" on their list since 2008! People are even sent to "Boot Camp" for a mimumum of 3 months for "Rehabilitation" .....

I guess you guys/girls will never be happy until everyone is doing what you do and think how you think.

Meantime in Bendigo we have murders, assaults, burglaries, ect fuelled by drug addiction.... Fuelled by boredom bad parenting too many bloody rules(nanny state)..... Technology changes.... People change with it temporarily.
We have more important issues to bitch about I think.

What really makes me laugh though is we have fossickers prospectors ect who enjoy what is for the most part a solitary antisocial activity that can cause neck and shoulder injuries ect (detectorist)..... Complaining about children being antisocial solitary with bad necks :|

I don't find detecting to be an antisocial activity, I'm always talking to people while out swinging. Women are generally very curious, I think I've met more women recently than if I went to the pub every night lol. As for a sore neck, my neck has ne er felt so good. I think you're missing the point LC. Don't tell me you wouldn't be grumpy if some kid walked into you with their face stuck in a phone and then gives you a stinkeye for not getting out of their way, or walks out in front of you while driving and then blames you for nearly running them over, that sorta makes me laugh.

Anyway I'm too old to know everything, I'll shut up while I'm still ahead. :) It's a funny old world we live in. :D
