NP ................... positives the key as your in the right area :Y: Spent my childhood in Chewton so lucky in that my school mates or their families own most of the land in the area. That was in the days when we were out ferreting and would climb the Garfield wheel and sit on top of it and eat our lunch. ;) You would probably get arrested now I believe ? :)

Everywhere I go I see dig holes and my spirits sink a bit

NorthPort when you see those dig holes get in amongst them .................... you'll be surprised what those before you may have left behind ;) I usually thank them for leaving me a sign there is gold about :D

Spot on.
Treat dig holes as a sign that gold could be there. If they are sloppy enough to not fill their holes in they are sloppy enough to leave some behind.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread. A nice little find in the Castlemaine area.

Thanks for the comments all. I'm looking forward to some cooler weather so it isn't quite as gruelling as it has been.

It sounds like I am more or less in the right area. Ive also wandered parts of the Fryers Ranges State Forest and the Fryers Ridge State Forest

Great colours from the setting sun

It could just be my eyesight, however that sure does look like a piece of gold you are holding to me?

It's funny you post that.. I'm wondering again about it. I buried it my backyard. So might have to dig it up again and double-check.

Also on topic I've found a couple of pieces recently in quartz Workings. The problem is I can't really identify where the quartz has come from. There are some nearby shafts and this is at the bottom of a Gully, but it's pretty apparent from the soil and the way rocks have been stacked that's its not in its natural location. It's got me scratching my head. As I would expect to see other quartz between the two locations.

No mights about it, I suggest you go look for it as soon as you can. Otherwise I will..Haha

Firstly lets start with you digging that nugget up from your backyard. I will bet my left nut that you will find its a very nice nugget (let alone your first) with some ironstone stain on it. If Im correct you owe me a beer hey! Let me know how you go. Cheers Keano

Will do Keano. I hope to be up there for a few days next week. I bet I can't find where I buried it!

Cpl K down Spring Gully Rd from Showells Hill end the entire area to the left was one mass of old workings. You would struggle to find an area that wasn't mullock heaps. :goldnugget:

How did you go?

There is so much junk in the backyard that sure enough I was unable to locate it. It might be a job for warmer weather.

Stupid me. I am pretty sure at the time I thought it wasn't the brightest idea!

So I've come to the conclusion there is no alluvial gold in Fryerstown. I've slogged it out today between Fryerstown and down to Drummond North checking out spots that have been historically worked but aren't on the maps and then up to Vaughan-Chewton road.

Sweet bugger all! 30+ buckshot pellets and assorted junk. What a silly hobby. How did I talk myself into it. ? Maybe the sdc2300 doesn't punch deep enough for natural gold and worked heaps have already been cleared out. If there are any locals keen to meet up to cheer me up in the coming months I'd appreciate it!

I think otherwise I'll need to start looking towards Bendigo Goldfields.

I'm struggling to locate / identify shallow ground. Of the 4 or so pieces of gold that I've found it's pretty much been specimen gold that got missed after it was dug out so its not really a case of locating the source.

I may need a mentor!

Hi All,
Newbie here...

Just got myself an SDC 2300 and went out to Chewton over the weekend, around Moonlight Flat.

Has anyone been around the Campbells Creek Plantation area? Not sure if this is a no go zone for prosepecting? Would love any advice!

Thank you all! :|

hi northport, you're doing all the right things, sdc will punch fairly deep,it's just luck of the draw.
pine forest ok to detect in,but a hard /steep slog in most parts.
digging targets in the pine forest can be difficult as most of it has been ripped several times over by bulldozers, and pine tree roots are like
steel cables to get through :( , [have a sharp pick as well] ps you need safety glasses on when in the pine forest,i use clear ones
good luck
