I'm planning a month's tour in WA next year. I'm trying to hire a 4x4 to do a trip from Perth to Kalgoorlie, meeka, Mount Augustus and back to Perth. I'll be doing off road bits to detect and camp out bush along the way. I can't find any of the normal car hire companies that will allow 'unsealed road' driving and all the backpacker camper operations are +$400 a day for 4x4 hire. I'm needing 21 days for the trip so that would be around $7000 which is mental. Anyone any thoughts on a solution or is this no longer a viable option in WA? I'm from the UK so buying is a no go too

The last pom to drop in bought a fully equipped Nissan Patrol using my address for his documents. In fact that vehicle is still parked in the back yard and we expect to see him back in the new year.

Just buy a good old second hand Pajero or similar 4X4 when you get here for around $6 to $8k, even if you lose some money because you have to sell it quickly when leaving, you will still be way ahead of renting.
I may need to resort to this mate. I lived in Brisbane 2002/3 and bought an old Falcon back then, think I sold it for the same too. I'm not sure if it's possible these days with no residence and the insurance/ drivers license though?

As others have said 2WD works ok in a lot of WA....if you have a clue about basic unbogging and arent too adventurous ie sticking to main tracks

I would also add get a sat data service device so you can check weather forecast.

Going to sleep in clear skies to wake up to the sound of solid rain can easily bring things to a halt, even if only 15 mm rain. A lot of goldfields WA dirt roads n tracks become greasy clay when wet and take days to dry
