I bought a Miller's Falls petrol pump 4 stroke from ebay brand new @ $200. The first one was crap, replaced for a second one and it is working fine. My mates one I had mentioned is similar to the 750W one you posted from Bunning, but he has a 1000W one. Make sure if it is a dirty water or large particle submersible. That way if you need to, you can suck some crevices :) Check the inlet hole to make sure its about 1" - 1.5" in diameter to do this though.

If you need to save, there is nothing worse than buying the right pump, trust me, I have been through it all! If you are able to, throw in a good river sluice into the creek and collect enough gold to get a new pump, electric pump + generator. Or make a rocker / cradle type sluice and start simple using a bucket of water each time you run material through. ( I really, REALLY wish I kept it simple at the start )

The problem is with a generator, you have a risk of putting the shovel through the cord while you are in the water. You can get around this by putting the cables above water using "Y" sticks.

The problem with a 2-stroke: too bloody noisy! Yet light. I could not handle the noise! I bought the 2-stroke from bunnings. Useless 3/4" outlet as well! Also mixing fuel can be annoying.

Problems with the 4-stroke: Making sure the oil stays away from the sparkplug, but not too much of an issue. Try not to buy a chinese one like me, but the second one has been fine ( so far. )

two stroke exhaust gives me a stinking headache . and yeah the noise is a PITA

agree on the risk of 240 volt cords around water . some gensets have an earth cable so you can bang an earth stake in the ground and that triggers the earth leakage circuit breaker if anything goes wrong ( before you get electrocuted )

( assuming the gennie has an ELCB or RCD fitted )

The pump I use is a 2stroke Mitsubishi with a 1" Koshin pump.
I bought it second hand but the original owner bought it from bunnings about 5 years ago for around the $160 mark.

Before anyone bangs on about 2strokes being noisy, these ones aren't as bad as some of the cheaper 4 stroke units available.
It claims to be 115L & 35M head.
I've used it on a Miners Den 2 tier sluice with no probs.
Weighs only 6.5Kg fueled up & is very reliable.

good point GD

i have never seen petrol pumps in bunnings so i just assumed he meant electric

i only buy honda pumps but TFK is prolly on a budget so the chinese ones might be his thing

The Chinese ones aeent to bad , just be wary that some only have a 3 months warranty . Alot of ppl may only get to use it once in that time so havnt had the chance to see if they have any faults. I did see some lately on ebay that had a 2 year warranty and a REAL shop to return them to in most Aus states , they were going for around the 200 mark or retail at their shop for 700-800.

Ps. The brand was AL-KO
