The people building the black Saturday fires website contacted me a while back, asking if they could use my video of the fires we drove though near Ulara. It is down the bottom of this page. The website is not fully finished yet.

Cheeky bugger called us grey nomads! Lol. He is also displaying some of my photos of the Victorian fires at there museum, he says they are very popular.

One day a govt with a little bit of integrity about them will introduce wages for bush firemen / wimin

modern 'sophisticated" society like ours and we still have volunteers going out and risking their lives for it.

I actually joined the RFS Last summer after fires went through our area, and whilst it would be cool to get paid for it, i think that would be a bad idea as you would find more and more people signing up purely for the money and when that happens more and more accidents are bound to occur as those people wouldn't really want to be there in the first place.
At least with the current system people are joining because they have a legitimate desire to help people.
That's just my 2 cents though, I've noticed a few other fireys on here and would be keen to see what they think.

Volunteers have a vested interest in the area they serve, whilst you always hear of the volunteers from one state going to help out another state, it is because they are trained and identified as suitable for the task at hand and fit the bill for skills requested.

While it would be nice to pay out "volunteers" GH is correct, you will get a mercenary attitude and more accidents will happen. The volunteers go through training in the local area, understand the local environment and are able to lead or assist the professional fire fighters and other rescue organisations.

I was involved in the Army response to the Black Wednesday fires and saw first hand the trouble untrained but well intentioned volunteers got not only themselves, but others who would follow their lead, into. The devastation through the Kinglake district and other areas around Melbourne are testament to just how vulnerable we are to Mother Nature, lets support our volunteer firefighters, SES, St Johns and others who take the time to train in the skills they see needed in their community by dropping a coin in the tin, buying the badge and letting the professional volunteers get on with it.

It is great that your items are being used DD and good on you for allowing them to stand as a tribute to the day that will live forever in the memory of all.

You guys that are in the RFS can I ask you a question?

Why don't the rural fire services promote products like barricade fire gel ???? (cut and paste it in your browser).
http://www.barricadefireprotection....ade-fire-blocking-gel-domestic-protection.htm

People could spray there home in it and leave. I know sometimes you don't have time, but there are other times you can see the fire approaching.

It seems ridiculous to me that products like this are not promoted as they could help reduce the fire damage to property.

Just curious to see why as I believe the Victorian Rural Fire Service are actually the agent for a similar product....

if you're in a bushfire prone spot with heavy bush around then why not just spend $1500 - 2000 and install a ring of pipe around your eaves with spray nozzles attached to them and if bushfires is approaching just push a button and walk away , leaving it to spray your house with that stuff while you run .

i would do that when i buy a farm property

put a roof tank in with 1000 - 2000 litres of backup water if the mains supply drops out and spray nozzles on the roof and eaves

test it once or twice a year and wash the house at the same time

That's a good idea which I've looked at, I have property out between Cowra and Grenfell and have a 12 volt pump that sprays on the roof and if you block the down pipes partially it will actually over flow from the gutters and some also runs back to the tanks recirculating the water.
The Barricade type fire gel can be sprayed on the walls and under the eaves as well as grass around the home to stop even grass fires approaching.
It sticks to walls and in effect creates a water barrier as it holds water to the wall and eventually can be hosed off or left to breakdown from UV rays.

Been there in the thick of it all and believe me, it is awesome, devastating but awesome all the same.
