I've actually been inside Mt Elephant Chewy, its in Derrinallum not that far from Skipton. Its a massive crater and i always thought Mt Napier was the last to erupt in OZ?
They say 6,000 to 10,000 years after its last eruption is classified as extinct for a volcano, so one might still erupt. :D or one might start up in a different location. would be cool to see one going off.

Its a good read Chewy.

Yeah it makes you wonder. I used to live quite close to Blue and Valley lakes when I was a kid and often wondered if they would erupt again oneday. The Blue lake is Mt Gambiers water supply and sits above the city. Pretty much across the road is the entrance down into the valley lakes. This is a major recreation spot locally with the Mounts biggest playground bbqs etc. If and when it happens there won't be time to run. :|

The earth is always moving Chewy, towns should not be where settlements had been placed in early days imo and future expansion on already unstable ground wether it be natural or man made will probably show these mistakes, just as it does overseas..Its all doomsday :p If tassie came from deposited sediments from the pacific ocean and smashed into vic during formation of gondwana like new studies suggest, there's a lot of history to be re-analyzed and events to be reconsidered. Time to make a homemade siezmometer yet? Lol

I think Mt Napier is the youngest volcano in Vic, though Mt Gambier & Mt Schank are meant to be some of the yougest volcanoes in Oz. I live about a 200m walk from the edge of the crater, definitely one of the most spectacular volcanoes around. :)
