Chromite an the Dun Mountain Copper Mining Company

The mining of chromite began in Nelson in the late 1850s and continued intermittently until about the turn of the century. It was most successful in the early 1860s and the Dun Mountain Mining Co. Ltd., extracted several thousand tonnes of ore from the slopes of Wooded Peak. Production peaked in 1862 when 3,843 tons, valued at 24,719
