Thanks RockRat - that was a good/hard one! But I've learnt a lot about WA prominent people that I didn't know before! :)

Who am I?

I was born in Lancashire in 1824 and departed for the colonial gold diggings in 1852, where I worked as a gold miner at various diggings around Victoria for two years, after which I got a real job, based at Sandhurst.

Congratulations xcvator!

This was my next part of the clue...

I led a somewhat hedonistic lifestyle and was well known for my enjoyment of gambling, particularly horse racing, and its said that Im credited with being the man who came up with the name for the famous Melbourne Cup. Another handicap race bears my name in my honour, to this day.

I have an usual claim to fame, whereas I was involved in three very notable events in Australian history - the Eureka Rebellion, the first Melbourne Cup, and the Ned Kelly Gang pursuit.

An interesting man...

Over to you mate!
