Neither of those blokes, Duck.

There is a bit of controversy over the young men who lied about their age to go and fight. This one got a fair bit of coverage in the newspapers back in the day. Apart from the connection with Canadians, this one had a nick name after a famous silent film star, probably due to sharing his youthful looks.

I suspect this person may have been mentioned in a book or newspaper article as I have just finished reading the entire contents of the internet and can't find him or her. My brain needs a rest.

I read about this a while ago but for the life of me I can't find it.
Went along the lines of what DrDuck is hinting at and some one like Clark Gable.
.
Still head scratching. :D

GT gets it, Walter Dunn;

It was on the internet, although the website discusses a number of early newspaper reports about Walter's adventures.

The following article about Walter was published in the Bendigo Advertiser on Saturday the 8th of April 1916.

STOWAWAY BOY SOLDIER.

Walter Dunn, aged 14, otherwise known as Charlie Chaplin, stowed away with the 1st Canadian Contingent, staying with them at Salisbury and Shorncliffe in England and then smuggling himself with the contingent to France, where he had many adventures, including a compound fracture of the left arm. He saw several battles, and was in the fighting at Loos. When he heard there was an army at Salonika, he look the train to Marseilles, found troops embarking, stowed away, reached Salonika, and has now attached himself to an Army Service Corps camp. Dunn is a great favorite with everyone, and makes himself really useful. His father is an officer in Princess Patricias Light Infantry.

Good question Dr, his name never came up in any of my searches but I never linked Charlie Chaplin. :)

Magilla the Dr Duck Likes Trove. It took some finding but I got there in the end. I made no reference to Chaplin in my endeavours/search either, just stumbled across it luckily. I used the angle of "The newspaper clue" and found it in a Bendigo paper of the times.

question

What am I

I came from a government money reward incentive to invent a solution to remove a problem facing our settlers. Instead of doing what the government wanted, I dodged the issue literally, but solved the problem.
