Was it the bushrangers John Williams, Charles Ellis, Daniel Jepps, and Martin Fogarty, who were arrested at Campbell Hunter's house by a party sent up from Melbourne by Latrobe? The bushrangers surprised Hunter and friends at breakfast and feasted and drank well before capture.
"Bushrangers captured by Gentlemen Volunteers, May 1842" That was an obscure one, if that's the answer.

You got it DrDuck. They first came together in a cheap boarding house in Melbourne. Apparently they where "tricked" into becoming bushrangers by a thief named Cam to pay their rent. According to the book I have they were Victoria's first bushranger gang.

Sorry for the delay, I've been on the road for the last 3 days....

Probably an easy one, as I have not tested the clue for Google proofness.

I came to Australia from Africa via England, and was blamed for a lot of things in Sydney. Who was I?
