Cheers SD - she is actually a bit of a hero for me - one tough lady.

Here we go -

What was the very odd request asked of the Australian Government in the 1960s in relation to a significant world-wide treaty? Very, very odd, especially considering the Government that asked it and the government it involved.

No sorry. It involved an international treaty. Our Govt was asked to do a very odd thing in relation to this treaty.

A cryptic clue, The Beatles.

one of the boys didn't have a visa,ringo ?

:)

No. This was a very serious issue. If we had of agreed, it could have had a huge impact on the ANZUS Treaty. If we had of agreed it had the potential to influence Australia's nuclear weapons program. It involved Australia and two other countries -one of these countries no longer exists -the other may see the break-away of part of its country this year.

One Govt involved was the UK. It was not the NPT but it was similar. The question is - what were we asked to do in relation to this treaty? We said no.

It was NOT to allow nuclear testing in Australia; that had already been done by the poms (cheers for that). It was NOT to stop our nuclear weapons program. It was NOT to declare war.

Ok - we have the two countries. The UK and the USSR. Now, what was the request asked of Australia in relation to a treaty?

Cryptic clue - The Police

No - it was nothing to do with the space program. It was a request to the Australian Government, to which we said no.

Mr Wiki says:-

On 8 August 1924, the United Kingdom signed the General Treaty with the Soviet Union which extended British diplomatic recognition to the USSR, and was also considered applicable to the British dominions of Canada, New Zealand, the Union of South Africa, the Irish Free State, Newfoundland, and Australia.[33] The Nationalist Prime Minister Stanley Bruce disputed the nature of the Treaty, saying that self-governing parts of the Empire were not consulted, it did not take into account Australia's rights to sign treaties with foreign countries and it ignored Australia's trade interests.[34] Bruce was also concerned that allegations of the Soviet Union spreading propaganda in Australia, which regarded communism as a menace, were not addressed.[35][36] The Treaty was not entered into as a treaty of George V on behalf of the Empire, but between two governments, and according to Bruce, Australia was in no way bound by the Treaty, and the Australian Press Association stated that there was initially an unsympathetic view in Australia towards restoring diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union

The original question: What was the very odd request asked of the Australian Government in the 1960s in relation to a significant world-wide treaty? Very, very odd, especially considering the Government that asked it and the government it involved.

Hint: It involved the UK, the USSR and Australia. In 1961 the treaty I am referring to was being negotiated and entered into force in 1963. There were three signatories (not Australia). The UK Govt asked Australia to do something in 1961 as part of these negotiations for this treaty that was very odd and would have had huge ramifications for our relationship with the US had we agreed. Menzies reply has been recorded as being 'sarcastic' and centred around our access to nuclear weapons on demand or the blueprints for them.

In 1961, the British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan asked Menzies if the USSR could establish seismic listening posts in Australia to enforce the provisions of the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Menzies replied that in exchange he wanted either British Nuclear weapons on demand or the blueprints to make them.

Correct. What a bloody cheek. From the country that gave us Gallipoli, Singapore, nuclear waste-land, ditching us for the Common Market comes - let's let the Commies into your country. The US had a tizzy over the whole matter as well.
