Joice Loch wasan extraordinaryAustralian. A freelancejournalist,published novelist and self-trained doctor. The granddaughter of Australias richest man in 1887, Joice Loch wasborn in Ingham, Queensland in 1887. As a child she endured a life of poverty in Gippsland, Victoria after her grandfathers fortunes disappeared with the removal of Kanaka labour on Queensland farms. Her fathers grandiose farming schemes came to nothing, depleting what remained of the familys fortunes. She escaped from her world of hard work and drudgery by writing poetry and a childrens book. Joice became an invaluable partof the Rumanian underground and was an inspiration in the successful evacuation of thousands of Polish civilians to British-controlled Cyprus, She was also the mastermind behind Operation Pied Piper, spiriting fifty Jewish orphans to the new land of Israel, via Cyprus, on the pretext of visiting the coast for a seaside holiday. She was awarded more medals (in fact, two more than Nancy Wake, the White Mouse of World War II fame) than any other Australian woman for her heroism, her humanitarian work, and her innovative programs instituted in various refugee camps throughout Europe.
