But I don't think we can leave it all to governments - have you volunteered in any youth organisations lately? I find it can feel quite rewarding - there is a lot more to youngsters than just the negative.
I would be interested to know more, particularly about helping the disadvantaged with outdoor activities (not so much indoor activities like provided by PCYC), such as gold detecting in the Goldfields, or just assisting with tours on holidays etc.
I have now retired, and on many of my recent travels I have met tour groups taking such people (including the elderly) on holidays. I admire them greatly.
I don't have cash to splash, but have some time and well wishing. Open to suggestions. PM if you like.

Thanks DD, but not really what I was thinking.
More along the lines of taking disadvantaged (youths to seniors) out to the bush, to show them a different world (away from sordid and crowded cities), of scenery (mountains, rivers, forests etc), animals, camping, night walks and the night sky, self sufficiency (cooking, tents etc). Even panning and detecting.
Maybe I'm dreaming!

In my youth my Mother was working for an SA Govt facility, these outings require a lot of support and structure
including a support person for each disabled person (dependant upon levels of disability).
Back then !

Disadvantaged or disabled youth and adults.

As far as I know you will also require some training and to do courses to just qualify as a volunteer, police check etc,
sadly it is far more common now because of quality of carer, organisation, safety for adult volunteer and the dependants.
Insurance demands too.

Make some calls but dont be put off, there are a lot of these organisations that need help and WANT to get the kids out
to experience things.

In some ways it would be easier if you could organise a venue and get them to come to it with their own support,
but you would still need police checks and insurances.
You can also ask the organisations where you can apply for 'Grants' to enable the costs to be covered, local Councils are doing that.

I wish it was as easy as it used to be, for the kids too.

Once my kids are all in School, I am looking to volunteer in the Childrens Hospital a couple of time a week,
get the kids involved in Sciences and small DIY stuff, dressed in a FAT bright orange tutu, over a white labcoat.
At least that is the plan.
I even have a demo video already of the character. Think KENNY in a tutu. :8

I have seen enough in there to know they need a brain break even if they are stuck in a bed. :brokenh:

Clown Doctors are a great help already.

Nursing Home oldies need the same attentions, but on a more mature level sometimes, many Nursing Homes now
accept volunteer pet visits, I know someone that does just that, she also reads to the oldies, it comforts them.

You are doing a good thing BigWave :Y: :trophy:

BW Maybe not what you want but our local hospital has a volunteer car they pick up the oldies who cannot get to the hospital for appointments.
The guys usually only get one day every three weeks driving.

Thats what I am going to do soon.

Would be pretty cool getting some of the underprivledged out in the bush but would be major undertaking I think

3 words.... War On Drugs......

The term was popularized by the media shortly after a press conference given on June 18, 1971, by President Richard Nixon

As a Canadian by birth and an American by embarrasment, it's sad what the US does to their own people....(and others).

2 small kids on the roof of a 4wd on a street. This is appalling in any context. They may have been going slow, but what if another car slammed into them

One of the pictures in that article looks like it was taken at the Beach House at Eden beach.
Had a great dinner there last year with a young couple we met while staying at Karrinyup waters caravan Park.
Ironic they drove a similar vehicle as the one in the article as well.

An old schoolmate of mine was run over last week and left to die on the side of the road.He had just left his daughters engagement party.Yesterday a taxi driver was charged, apparently he thought he hit a kangaroo. The two passengers came forward when they read the story of my friend being killed.Thing is that the original reports of his death the next day reported the specific road where the incident occurred so surely he knew it was actually my friend that he had hit and he should have come forward.

That`s such a crap thing to happen, Eldorado.

Sorry for your loss. All the best to you and your mate`s family .

Thanks guys.Spot on Ded,if you thought you hit a roo you would stop and get out to check the damage to the car at least.Very sad,he was only 51.

Im not intending to be controversial but the rule of law and due process is still the best system weve got.

I often hear so many suggestions about sentencing, substance abuse, gun control, immigration and my favourite, the good old days.

Many appaling acts existed long before today, some were never prosecuted.

Thats not to say more cant be done collectively, but i just cant fanthom this outsourcing of problems and safety to the government dialogue I hear so often.

I dont pretend to know the answers to all societies issues but I can reconcile my thoughts on crime with 3 facts.

Humans are generally violent as a species and substance abuse exacerbates the issue.

Crime tends to increase in economic downturns and poor areas.

Most of the population is very unlikely to be a victim of a violent crime statistically speaking. You are more likely to be killed in a motor vehicle accident, and more likely to be injured at work. The point is assuming safe conduct in our day to day lives always carries some risk.
