Hi, My name is Jeff.

My mate Gordon has a had a repetitive dream about finding some gold outside of Kalgoorlie (not much area there hey!)
We've decided to give it a go, but we have no idea what we're doing.

To start with, we figured we should hire a top-end detector, and buy a less expensive one to keep.
(My parents have a farm in Narrogin which I am told could be worth a look as well, hence buying one)

Can anyone suggest a good beginners model we can buy for about $1000 to start with?
We don't want anything too advanced or too confusing. Something user friendly.

Sure, a lot of our friends are laughing at us right now, but we'll have a good time anyway!

Thanks,

Jeff

Thanks guys. Has anyone tried a Fisher Gold Bug 2?
Ive read a few reviews but the opinion are mixed.
Is this suitable for a beginner?

Welcome Jeff
The GB2 is a very handly machine on very fine gold , and it will pick up big bits to but not nearly as well as low frequency or pulse induction detectors. As a beginner you would have to get used to the manual ground balancing and possible false signals in highly mineralised soil. Good value for what they are capable of , guess it depends on what sort of gold you would like to target as to which you buy and what you hire. A GB2 plus a PI type machine would cover all bases.

But as you are in an area for possible big gold id get a Minelab in the SD range and target that gold and perhaps hire something for the tiny bits. U may have to spend a few hundred more than a 1000 tho.
Gaz

But if u do your homework and practice a beginner can learn to use a goldbug2 , all detectors at the end of the day all need practice & homework so its no different.

Hey Jefftsa welcome, my advice is just go and hire two detectors initially and see what you think, I am sure you will enjoy your time out with your mate regardless. It is pretty much how I got started as well.

Hire an SDC2300 and GPX5000 this way you get to try two of the best machines for what you want to do. Of course these are Minelab and there other brands these are the most popular. Then would be the Garrett ATX and then the new Minelab GPZ7000. These are what you would want in the gold fields. GPZ $10,700 price tag puts most of us off at the moment :(

The problem with these machines is they have limits in areas of magnetic interference, power lines etc... So not much good around suburbia.

Most of the entry level machines will work and find some gold if it is around and on the surface. The problem that we have in WA is very highly mineralised ground and most entry level detectors just cannot handle the noisy ground. The GB2 can handle some areas, but you will struggle in others.

You also have the CTX3030. So plenty of options.

Work on Budget
Main Purposes of the machine
Areas likely to detect

From there you can make a decision, but in the first case I would hire a couple of good machines.

Now before you do any of that, you need to get your miners rights, plus you also need to understand where you are allowed to go.

Best of luck.
