G'day one and all. I'm an old bugga hoping to learn new tricks. I'm just at the very beginning of my metal detecting journey and would appreciate any advice in regards to what detector to kick off with. I'm going to start off with detecting old coins and relics and see where that takes me. I live in Sydney's west and looking to possibly hook up with a local group who I could tag along with on field trips.

I welcome any advice from anyone in regards to detectors, how to, where to etc.

Cheers and good hunting

Hi Td, welcome. Maybe a good idea to seek out a local group/lapidiary club and they can assist in your choice.
Have a big read of the website--tons on info for beginners as well as experienced members.

Hi Treasuredown. Welcome to PA. Regarding detectors: It's a big question. Budget is one of the main factors as in any hobby. Scroll down on the main page of the forum and you will see the different brands of detectors each have their own section to read up on. Another good way to see how they actually produce the goods is to have a look through the Members finds section found here.... https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=89

And maybe the Treasure, coin and relic section... https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=57

Best advice i can offer apart from doing research is buy the best you can afford. You will want to upgrade as it becomes very addictive.

Good luck

Buy the best detector that you can afford, within reason, a newbie coin machine shouldnt need to cost more than $1000 new. My garret ace350 cost me less than 200 secondhand, and it or the ace250 are perfect intro machines for what you want. Both are less than 500 new. Get on google, watch some vids about the various intro level machines.

Hi Treasuredown,

You missed a great meeting on Tuesday night at Parramatta. The prospectors' Home Club meets at the Harry Todd Band Hall, Jubilee Lane, Harris Park, at 7:30pm on the first Tuesday of each month (except for January).

They seem to have a lot of outings with camping. A great way to learn and get experience. And well worth joining up, which I just did.

I have sent you a PM.

Cheers,

DavidH.

Thanks Ramjet/Greg!

I'll certainly keep researching like you suggest Ramjet. As for budget, I don't really want to spend more than $300 on the detector itself as I have to fork out around $200 for the Garrett hand held scanner. That'll get me up to $500 to begin with. I don't mind buying a better model second hand, so ill keep my eyes peeled on Gumtree.

Thanks again guys for taking the time to respond.

Cheers :D

New members do not have access to the PM feature until they have Ten posts. This is to protect members from Scammers and Bots. You can still email any member by clicking on the email button below their avatar.

Ah. Thanks Roger. I should have corrected that. When I tried to PM him it did give me the option to send an email, so that's what I did. Havne't heard back from him even though I plan on heading into Parramatta today.

(Maybe he didn't want any of the vi*gra and other stuff I tried to sell him?) :)

Just joking guys... Seriously.

Cheers for now,

DavidH

A pin pointer can cost you a lot less than $200 and perform as well if not better... See the sponsors area and look for Deteknix x-pointer.

$60 saved on the pin pointer could see you in the next class of detector...

Good point AM. Many start without the pin pointer and buy it later. Perhaps with proceeds of what they find detecting.
From all the videos I'm watching online, the pin pointer seems to be a must? Even though I'm a newby to this game, it makes sense to me to have it. Am I wrong?

hahah.... thanks Jaros :D

I see you are using the X-Pointer by Deteknix. How do you find it? Have you used a Garret?

Cheers

Hey there Ramjet,

I had a look at the second hand 350. Being a newby, the damaged coil depicted in the picture put me off. I wouldn't know what to do if this failed, besides buying a new one. Thanks any ways for looking out for me. I really appreciate it.

Cheers
